New Alternator Makes My Lights Flicker!

Recommended Posts

CaptainP

My alternator failed spectactularly on Friday night, bearings everywhere. Grabbed a new one yesterday and we fitted it last night. All seems fine on the charging front however when my lights are on and I rev the engine they get brighter. Why is it doing this? I also charged the battery last night to see if the alternator had dragged it down but no joy.

Cheers

Steve

I think every car i have ever had has done this. On idlethe alternator may well be putting out 13.5 volts when the revs are up a bit this may well go up to 14.2 hence your lights get a bit brighter.

Turns out the new alternator had a faulty voltage regulator. The one I have now has 2 spade connectors as well as the main power lead. One has a picture of a battery on it the other is blank, any ideas which one I plug the excite wire into?

Cheers
