Driveshaft End Nut And Split Pin

Recommended Posts

number2301

I've changed my driveshaft and can't get the original split pin and castellated nut thing back on. Are these necessary? Are there different types? Have I not fitted the shaft right if it won't go on?

I've refitted the hub nut and done it up to the specified torque with a torque wrench and just to look at it, it doesn't seem to stick through the hub as far as the other one.

The driveshaft I changed was on the right hand side (longer shaft) by the way.

Also what's the deal with the metal bottom balljoint protector? I think my old one was knackered (and even then there was only one on the right hand side, not the left) as it was bent and just seemed to be piercing the balljoint so I binned it. Does that need replacing?

I binned the protectors on a previous car with no ill effects. The pin must be present as my old car failed the mot on this. Surely it should protrude the same amount as the other shaft. Might be an idea to take the nut off and see if the shaft will go further into the hub.

Like Dan says, you have to have the locking pin unless you have a hubnut that should be staked into the end of the driveshaft as fitted onthe 1.6 GTi or some 309 shafts.

Is this a new driveshaft & does it have the hole for the pin?

If its the same hub & driveshaft then it can't be seated properly but I can't see why not.

I've never ued the balljoint protectors, they've always been removed before I got the car.

Graham.

Its a new driveshaft, can't remember if it had a hole for the pin so I'll have to check that tomorrow if the weather isn't too bad.

Is it just a matter of pushing the hub towards the gearbox to make the driveshaft sit further out?

did you get a new nut with the driveshaft? it might not have the holes as my 1.9 has a driveshaft of each type!

As above, ive recently bought two wheel bearing kits that came with new nuts without the hole in, they were meant to be 'staked' but my shafts are meant to have a castlelated nut and pins so i binned 'em and reused the old ones with new split pins.

I've got AB Motorsport nyloc hub nuts that supposedley don't need staking or pinning. Will it fail the MOT with these?

surely it can only fail the MOT if the tester can see them

how many do you know that take the center caps out

Came with a new hub nut but no new locking nut/pin. I guess I'll have to take the hub nut back off to have a look for the hole.
