Looks like a Be 1 to me.

i'd second that. i'd also hazard a guess at it being a 1.6 be1, if it was already coupled up to the mi16

It sure looks like a BE1, did it come from a 205 gti? You can remove the diff cover and there will be a number stamped in there, or count the teeth, you can work out if it's a 1.6 or 1.9 box from that.

BE1 is lift up reverse (with a cable that goes into the oil fill hole on the top)

i've just compared your picture to a gearbox i have.

the number i have on the be1 1600 gearbox is 11DS1

very near to where you got 12DS2 from, it will actually state be1. if you removed the clutch cable mounting bracket, you can see quite clearly what it says.

the bracket is the one being held on by 2 x 11mm hex headed bolts

Think you're all right as there is a threaded hole for the cable on top and it is stamped either 1986 or 89 can't tell which way up the No 6 is.

that's me looking for the cable conversion then

Hi !

Remove the diff. cover and read the numbers stamped on the differential

You'll see the numbers like this : 16X65 , or 16X59 , 14X62 etc.etc depending on gearbox type ...

Regards !

Does it have a hole for the crank angle sensor? Early BE1 boxes didn't.

It's a Be1 as stamped on the top :excl:

It has a hole at the top near the flywheel which I presume is for a crank sensor, I think you can see it on this picture;-

I havn't got an attatchment for the box to run cable to gearstick but as I can select five gears and reverse (left and forward) would it be Ok to use without the reverse block, I suppose a light in the dash powered via reverse switch would be a good idea. :)

you could run without the reverse plug although it could be quite easy to accidently put it into reverse rather that 1st and shag the box :excl:

I can appreciate that it may be easy to select reverse instead of first but I couldn't do it on the move as I never have use first unless starting off .

I would be interested to know how you managed it as reverse on my box will be well over to the left and up ,,,unless the quickshift causes a problem, I never thought of that.

If I can't fix the blocking mechanism then I will fit a dash light to show that reverse has been engaged. Maybe a buzzer would be better :)
