Shells Ok?

Recommended Posts

Guest matty D

Following on from my previous thread about engine problems after a track day, Ive taken peoples advise and checked the shells. Can you guys take a look at these pics and let me know if they are ok. I havent been able to get to number 4 yet as the oil pump thing is in the way. No2 has some marking on although its not very deep.

they look absolutelty fine to me, ok there is some very slight marks on some but certainly not enough to give low oil pressure. It is far more likely to be a faulty gauge

the only one that looks a bit dodgy is pic 19 in the album. But like Jonnie says, that shouldn't give low oil pressure. I'd now torque it all back up. Turn engine on, see what idle is like and guages. Then start looking for electrical fault. Start with the wiring on the sender unit, and go from there.

Good thing is that it doesn't look like the shells! :)

Good effort on getting the shells out. Now that you got them out and if you can afford it, replace them as well as the conrod bolts.

Well thats good news!

Do I have to do everything up as tight as poss or is there any specific torque settings? And do I need to use any thread locking compound on the internal bolts?

Worse mate, they need to be torqued to a figure, then an angular torque applied. Dont use any locktite or similar, just a little lube.

The rod bolts will be fine to go again if the bottom end isnt rattled, but i would put new shells in seeing as its apart, one looks like its on the way out and they arent a great deal of money. Saves you having to do a horrible job more than once (taking the sump off on the car that is!).

Although the other ones don't look too bad, I would check the one under the oil pump if I were you (#4). Seen as you've gone this far.

Because I've had a few problems with oil surge at trackdays and when I've stripped the engine #4 big end always had the worst damage.
