macaroni 17 1 Cars Posted March 14, 2008 I recently bought an F reg, 1988 1.9 gti and the gear ratios seem very low. At an indicated 2000rpm it is doing 36mph, verified by Satnav. That infers 18mph/1000rpm, which is lower than the 1.6 box. Is this possible or am I missing something? Any help gratefully received. Antony
welshpug 1,666 Posted March 14, 2008 is it doing roughly 80 mph at 4k rpm? and just over 30 mph @1500? (in 5th BTW)
simonb 0 Posted March 14, 2008 the 1.6 box does 70mph @4000 rpm.
macaroni 17 1 Cars Posted March 15, 2008 (edited) It does an indicated 70 @ 4000, so I guess it is a 1.6 box. The speedo seems to over-read by about 10%, according to the satnav. That does explain its startling low down urge and relative lack of legs approaching 100! Its perfect for the roads I regularly use it on, but might be a chore for any motorway work.
