Can't Get Wheels To Lock Under Braking

Recommended Posts

flipperthebushkangaroo

Well here we go again, little black car now starts and runs like a dream BUT

the breaks do not seem very powerful, have had both local garage and Peugeot dealer look at them Peugeot did a bit to the rear drum but otherwise both garages say they are fine.

So on the way back from Lincoln found a nice straight clear stretch of road and slammed on at about 60 (honest officer it was noware near 90!!!!) car stayed nice and straight so kept breaking til i had stopped at no point did the wheels lock (1.6 with standard breaks no ABS).

1.What do you think, it always used to lock under such heavy breaking, what could be the problem?

2. what difference do braided hoses make and would i notice during normal road use?

Thanks in advance

Roddie

I'm using o.e Textar pads and the front will lock up if I try hard enough, what pads are you using? and how old is the brake fluid?

braided hoses shold make the pedal a bit firmer as they have less give in them.

The honest answer to both questions is i'm not sure :P , think the fluid has been in a couple of years since rear beam was changed over no idea what pads are on as they were on the car when i bought it back.

Might have to give braded hoses a try as my front flexys are starting to crack a bit (am assured they are ok for MOT)

Thanks again

i'm sure that the brakes locked up fairly easily under hard braking when i had car before.

stamp on it harder and faster from a lower speed if you want to lock them. Why you would, other than to indicate the maximum breaking effort can overcome the grip level, i'm not so sure.

or try sticky pads.

or check your tyre pressures.

what tyres are you using?

can you lock up in the wet?

the 1.6 calipers have plenty of stopping power with decent pads in.

I don't actually want the wheels to lock it's just that I'm a little worried that it is a sign that they are not working as effectively as they could be/ were before,

tyre pressures are good, using p6000's which have loads of tread

Might be poor pads they were fitted in the time couple of years the car was away from me

Have not tried it in the wet I'm a chicken like that :P

To be fair it could be that i am just unfairly comparing the brakes on the 205 with my 307 which stops stupidly quick :P

Thanks again for the advice

Roddie

i'd change the fluid first as that seems the most likely culprit IMO

With sprinting we have found that the brakes go off (efficiency wise) and the best and instant fix is new discs and pads

Whether it is a genuine change in the disc or not .....

.... but it has never failed to sort this peculiar decreasing efficiency

I can't lock the front wheels in my TD very easily but it stops more than quick enough with a decent prod of the centre pedal.

People in newer cars following have swerved onto the opposite side of the road because they couldn't stop quick enough.

I can brake hard enough to hear the tyres struggling for grip but they only lock when the surface is loose or in poor condition which I personally prefer to being able to lock up easily.

Graham.

Agreed. You want the brakes to grip strong enough that they slow you down quickly, but not enough to lock the wheels. Locking the wheels means loss of control and also when the brakes are locked your tyres don't grip as much.
