Mi Sump Leak

just resealed my mi sump and goin to try it this wkend but have feeling it goin to leak again.Its the alloy one, do i need the gasket with the alloy sump or should i try just sealant.I got some red looking loctite stuff but if it leaks again what other stuff is any good.My mate uses dow corning black stuff have you heard of this before.

It doesn't need a gasket. The best stuff I've found is ThreeBond 1211. It's designed for metal-metal sealing, especially motorcycles. So perfect for the job.

Dow Corning is one of the biggest manufacturers of this kind of stuff, got an acquaintance that works for them as theres a massive plant in Barry, south wales.

 

you'll probably find that most stuff is made by them under different brands B)

 

the general rule on pugs is; steel sump - gasket, alloy sump - sealant.

 

I tend to use Wurth sealants if I can get it, or Meillor is a common brand.

 

general rule is to be as clean as possible and let the stuff start to set before fitting the sump, roughly half an hour or so, and leave the engine to stand for as long as you can before running is to keep the oil off the sealant.

 

don't overdo the tightening of the bolts either, as this tends to squeeze the stuff out.

I am also going to remove my sump of my MI (I have the Iron 405 2L), Will I need a gasket? Can i replace the sump with an alloy one or are they diffrent?

yeah think u can put an alloy sump on.Just been out in mine and its starting to leak again ha ha.Think monday i will reseal spacer with different sealnt and try not using a gasket on sump just sealnt and see what happens.Just want to fix this so i can get it to sbc for a rolling road session.
