Best Place For A Set Of Mi16 Lifters?

Recommended Posts

Stu

As above peeps, ive just ordered a PeterT inlet and chip package so figure while the cams are out its worth putting a set of lifters in as ive got a couple of noisy ones.

So who's best/cheapest?

Pick one of the above.....

I once helped put a set of "ULTRAPARTS" lifters into a mates car, absolute junk.

What bits do you actually have to renew when you change a cam and which bits should you renew whilst you have it in bits? I presume there are seals at each end etc?

As Welshpug says you can recondition them.

You could try banging them on some wood so the centre piston section comes out. Depress the ball to release the oil. Clean and re set. Should help those noisy ones.

I had to replace some but that was due to some actual scoring on the surface of the lifter.

Quite a few of them now have the surface wearing away so these are just junk, Best place to get them from is Pug, Cheapest is a motor factor.

If they clean up in 30-60 secs. they're still good. Much longer and you'll need new ones.

Well, its weird, they seem to get worse as it gets hotter. Fine from from cold, but then i get an odd noisy one when hot?

yeah mine does that too.I had it refurbished 2 years ago and aint used the car as been doin other things on it.Taxd it last week and now the top end is annoying me, it never used to sound tappety.Reason i had it refurbished as the liner seals went on me and engine went really tappetty on way to chester as the oil and water mixed but everything been fixed but it rattly top end.May just get another head and get an inlet cam to make more bhp.

You may have misinterpreted my reply. By "clean up in 30-60 secs.", I meant dressing the top of the bucket to restore it to new condition. There's some pics./videos on my website. If they don't cleanup in that time, the cam lobe has already dug too deep into the bucket, possibly through the case hardening.

Provided the engine has had regular oil changes, even lifters that have done 200 000+Km will clean up ok. This applies to the piston/check valve as well.

I would find good second hand OEM lifters and give them a reco before buying aftermarket alternatives. The metallurgy and build quality is vastly superior in the OEM lifter. If I couldn't find good originals, I'd swap to solid lifters and change the cams as well. This gives you the opportunity to enlarge the lifter bore to 33mm (std is 32mm). More often than not, the lifter bores are in worse condition than the lifters themselves.
