djinuk 2 Posted March 12, 2008 my 1.9 gti runs well , however it does sometimes sound like a 1.1 fiesta , due to a tapping noise, ive searched the boards and found manifold gaskets to be common cause and i am going to change there to see if its helps, however the tapping gets quicker the higher the revs are so i am guessing its something else, its just had a fresh oil change which has not helped. Any advice or suggestions, btw the car has a magnex 4 branch manifold on it so no splits etc.
205007 12 Posted March 12, 2008 1.9 - tappety = worn cam lobes they are renound for it or exhaust manifold cracked (magnex manifolds crack on the spot welds to the flange) could still be incorrectly fitted exhaust gaskets but that would be there forever and not sometimes lastly check clearances on tappets! djinuk 2 Posted March 13, 2008 i will check the manifold for cracks. As for checking clearances if im honest im not to sure how to go about doing that.
205007 12 Posted March 13, 2008 you need to take the rocker cover off and put a feeler gauge in between the bottom of the cam lobe and the lifter if you do a search the correct clearances are on here (i think 8 thou exhaust and 10 thou inlet but i could be wrong)
djinuk 2 Posted March 13, 2008 at which point do you turn the engine to before you measure the clearances if that makes sence,
205007 12 Posted March 13, 2008 you need to do each lobe separatley and turn the cam to point upwards
djinuk 2 Posted March 13, 2008 Sorry it makes sence now, Just searched and found the clearances i will show my findings tomorrow night all going to plan. Thanks for your time
djinuk 2 Posted March 15, 2008 can any1 show me a diagram so that i know which valves are inlet and which are eghausts. thanks
GLPoomobile 958 Posted March 15, 2008 IIRC, from the cambelt end it will go: Exhaust, inlet, inlet, exhaust, exhaust, inlet, inlet, exhaust. Just compare it to the inlet and exhaust manifolds - where you have a runner on the manifold there is the point where the port and valve will be, and so the cam lobe for that valve will be directly above it. Grim.Badger 15 Posted March 17, 2008 I thought it was the 1.6 cams that suffered from wear The cam in my old 125k 1.9 engine seems to be as good as new. My money would be on an exhaust manifold/gasket problem or possibly a timing problem although with the later you would have problems with your spark plugs degrading (and pincking obviously ).
