hmm, I killed a set of those apec pads in 20 minutes :)

certainly noticeable that geometry at the rear, but you do lose the camber a bit when you lower them I've noticed

It may be just the camera angle, but the rear geometry is bordering illegal IMO. That's not a criticism, just maybe an advisory that some anal copper might have a nose at that as the tyres almost protrude beyond the body.

I'm close too, but not that close. :)

F - A - B. Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they only check it at the top IIRC, certainly nowhere as strict as they are with trucks and mudflaps.

I think it just looks bad from that angle, from the top its not bad at all. Plus the fact there are lots of cars on here that have been running the same spec for many years, I've not heard of any of them having problems.

Great work Tom, that holiday seems to have put the spring back in your step, not that you were exactly dawdling with it anyway.

Some great information within this topic. Thanks.

Arrgghh, major frustration! After polishing off all the last little bits, went to fire it up to attempt a crawl around the block, and the bloody battery has gone just flat enough so it will turn over but there isn't enough juice to the DTA to make it run! Its now on fast charge and I'm in for 10 mins as otherwise I try it every 30 secs!!

Not yet, but according to Royal Mail there is something waiting for me at the sorting office

But that aside......

BIG NEWS

I've been up the road! In fact done about 8 miles!

First trip literally to the end of the road and back, back in garage, check round, all OK

Second trip round and round the block about 5 times, back in garage, check round, all OK

Third trip up the road, I've set the fuelling map plenty rich, and the ignition map well on the safe side, so give it a little, bung blocking up the redundant pipe from the idle valve pops out!! Back in garage, all OK, put bung back and secure with some jubillees.

Forth trip, up and down the main road, sods law I'm pootling along running in with a map that is no where near and a Mk1 Golf decides to pick on me, just you wait my silver friend, just you wait. But basically pretty well behaved and no major problems.

All in all OK, initial impressions are that I like boost, seems to spool up between 2500 and 3000, although I've not used past about 50% throttle yet. 23mm torsion bars have a lot more give in them than I thought they would. And I am now seriously seriously itching to get some miles on it then take it for mapping!!! I think tomorrow evening may be solid driving about!

Unfortunately my new laptop doesn't accept a PCMCIA card, so I've no way of getting video off my camera and onto the net. Will strive to sort something out to get a vid or two on at some point.

Well 25 miles and counting, nothing to report really, I've got an oil filter and some more oil so will probably dump it at 50 miles and put fresh in. M@tt has been out in it, not setting the world alight just yet, but it is certainly promising!

So would you say it's worth doing? I know it's not at it's best yet, but if someone happened to have a 1.6 xu engine and the bits from an 8v turbo, would it be worth getting the rest of the bits together?

As Tom said i went for a spin in it with him today, all credit it to him it's one quick little motor!! Even though it's not properly mapped yet as he said it still pulls really really well, should be a beast once mapped properly!

That Mk1 Golf had better be prepared to have its pants pulled down and shown who's boss

Well another 30 miles on it this afternoon, so its done 60-odd now, still all going fine really, had it on the motorway for a junction and it will sit at 70mph quite happily. All the temps are good, I've been keeping a careful eye on the oil temp as I haven't got an oil cooler on it at the moment, but even after 20 miles cross country mostly cruising up to about 4000rpm, it had only got to the 2nd bar on the gauge. Oil pressure when hot drops to the first line on the gauge at idle, but really thats as I'd expect with the turbo and oil jets to feed.

Can't wait to get it mapped now, I have a contact at a rolling road and with any luck perhaps will get it on there in the next week or so, so for now my next jobs are to dump the oil and put some more in and a filter, and get some more miles on.

75 miles and counting, it hasn't used any oil or water. I've even taken our lass for her maiden voyage, coupled with plenty of "be careful" and sharp intakes of breath!!

Oil and filter have been changed tonight, I'm just on cheapo 15/40 at the moment, its good enough for now, plus its not exactly getting much time on it before it gets changed.

I also did a couple of farty little jobs, one of which was finishing connecting the alarm up, so I can leave it places- it locks through the alarm so I haven't been able to lock it for the last few days, luckily it lives in the garage. However to get some more miles on I'll probably use it for work this week now it locks!

Up to 150 miles tonight, first casualty is the OS driveshaft, you might know the shafts were about the only parts not rebuilt/replaced, oh no, it was a "USED BUT GOOD CONDITION" ebay special.........when will I ever learn........... :) It hasn't failed and still drives, but its not healthy.

At first I thought it may have been the LSD making the noise, as I know they can be heard, but its definitely the shaft, its clicking on lock, and also making the gearlever wobble about indicating that the inner joint is no better than the outer. Oh and not to forget a nice graunching crunch every now and again. So I'm going to have to try and get a recon in a hurry and fit it sharpish as I'm hoping to get it on the rollers this week.....

Other than that though all is hunky dory, although I have to say its bloody louder than I hoped it would be, I can see Mr Magnex rear box getting cut open and having some more sound deadening packed in.
