Ben 0 Posted March 11, 2008 Right I don't seem to be having much luck with the car at the moment. Its been a little bit smokey on and off for a while now but just recently its got fairly bad and times. The coolant level light came on this morning so I checked it and the reservoir was pretty much dry, not good. I then checked the oil cap and the gauze inside is all creamy, again not good. I did a compression test a couple of weeks back and all cylinders were around 11bar but I hear it is not un-common for headgasket problems to not cause low compression? Does this sound like a blown headgasket? And if so how much is it likely to cost me in parts if I have a go at fixing it myself? Cheers
jonnie205 1 Posted March 11, 2008 sounds like gasket mate, best do a co2 test. can be quite a hard job, head bolts can snap etc but see how you go, and when it goes back make sure to put the larger spacer over the rear left bolt over water pump else you will scrap the block
lagonda 42 Posted March 11, 2008 Was suspicious of h/g failure on mine, but thought it must be something else as compression tests were very good and even. H/g eventually blew in a major way, but appears the original problem was 2 cracks in the head, from spark plug hole to exhaust valve seat on both middle combustion chambers. It seems they only "blew" under certain load/speed/temperatures, and of course, never when testing the compression!
DamirGTI 344 Posted March 11, 2008 (edited) Hello ! Did you check if the oil has changed color - mixed up with coolant/water ... ? Anyway something is wrong if it uses the coolant , could be the head gasket , cracked head , cracked liner , worn/leaky liner seals ... the 11bar is a bit low i like to see 14bar value on this engines (with ideally no or just slight variations in between the cylinders..) Regards ! Damir Edited March 11, 2008 by DamirGTI
