davemar 16 Posted March 10, 2008 I decided to brave the elements this morning to get to work, and drove through some pretty big puddles. After a while the car started misfiring really badly and the rev counter was jumping all over the place (anywhere between 0 and 8000rpm!). In the end it got so bad I had to pull over and stop the engine. I checked under the bonnet and there was quite a bit of water sprayed around the ground connections by the headlights and some sprayed around the coil and ignition module area (it's running Jetronic with the coil mounted in the corner). The engine didn't want to restart and there was no spark. In the end I walked home (got soaked!) and collected an old ignition amplifier I had. I replaced it in the car, and now I had a spark but no start. I couldn't feel the tachy relay click, but it did after a while. Still not starting. Checked the plugs and they were soaked in petrol, so cleaned those off. Finally she started and got home with the engine running smoothly. I'm not best pleased a bit of water can cause the electrics to play up so much. It's also rather crap that the ignition module should be so fragile to fail like this. I'm not sure which connection became flawed due to water, but I would hope that the module should survive a bad ground or +ve supply.

Mine hasn't got a cover, has anyone got a picture of what it looks like? I'm not sure whether the water came from the top by the edge of the bonnet (it was hammering it down), or kicked up underneath the car. Is there a substance I can smear over the connectors that'll inhibit water from getting in?
gary205 0 5 Cars Posted March 11, 2008 I guess this is the cover you're talking about. Coil Cover 1 Coil Cover 2 Hope those links worked as I'm not used to posting pictures. Yours if you want it for the price of postage. No use to me me now as both of mine have the newer style coil on the inlet manifold.
