Filling My Gear Box

Recommended Posts

BossHogg

ok i've changed the lower engine mount replaced drive shaft seals, now i'm stuck on the easy bit, filling the gearbox with oil. I have the correct oil, but no idea where to fill the gear box. I've read my haynes manual and just end up confused.

Looking at the top of the gearbox i have 3 choices, one where the plug for the reverse light comes out, two, some kind of white plastic bung, and finally a black blanking plug which is at the highest point on the box. I would gamble on it being the black blanking point at the highest point but i thought i would make sure with the learned gents on here before i make a tit of it.

thanks in advance

There's a bolt on the side/end of the gearbox. Next to the end casing. You can put the car on full left hand lock, remove the bolt and fill it there until it overflows. New crush washer. Job done.

I personally always fill them with 1.5L through the black plastic plug on the top. Then remove the plug on the side (which is the level plug) and top up with more oil until it dribbles from the level plug. The car needs to be parked level to do this. Once it stops dribbling replace both plugs. I do it this way as I think its easier to get the oil in at the top of the box, each to their own though.

i always find trying to fill from the side a bit of a pain myself, i can never angle the bottle properly, the chassis leg gets in the way

if you look at this pic below you can unscrew the black plug on the top (just right and down from the end of the brown plug) and fill the gearbox from there with the required amount (check haynes). Dead easy if you have already drained the gearbox. The hole is the same one as where the lift up reverse cable goes if you have a be1 style gearbox.

Thanks M@tt thats the one i was talking about and seems to be the easiest, especially for a lazy person such as myself. Seems to be some kind of breather? as has a hole straight through the plug.

Anyway thanks all the posts most appreciated.

I use an old brake fluid container as a header tank with a lenght of tygon tubing attached to the top which sits up by the header tank/suspension strut and then then the tubing runs down into the filler on the side of the gearbox. Makes it much easier to fill and you dont need to remove anything to get at the top gearbox plug either. Unfrotunately I cant take credit for the idea as it was my dads .

dont forget you still need to remove the level plug even if you fill up from the top.

I always fill from the side removing the 18mm bolt. All gear oil usually comes with the long neck tops so it's usually easy to fill.
