Couple Of Iron Block Mi Questions

Recommended Posts

Dan Ingram

Right I've got a couple of things I need clearing up. I've been searching and I think I've sussed most things but would just like some help with a couple of bits.

In this picture the circled blue bit is where the knock sensor goes as I wont be needing that am I ok to just leave that as it is?

The red circled bit I understand is the oil level sensor which I also wont be using as far as I know so am I ok to just cut the wire off and leave the sensor in as a bung?

The green circled bit I've read in Dr Sartys post is apparantly the oil filler but I thought thats what the yellow circled bit is? So whats the green circled bit?

The turquoise circled bit I understand is the oil pressure switch? If thats right where does the oil pressure sender go as on other engines I've seen it goes just above the filter but I don't have anywhere for it there, any ideas?

The purple circled bit is an oil breather but where does it breath to?

And finally the orange circled bit, is that the oil temp sensor? I cant tell what its meant to be its a bit mangled lol

Thanks in advance

Dan

Here goes

1. Oil Level, A gearbox bung work's on this or you can chop the leads off

2. The Knock Sensor fit in the same place but on the fron of the block

3. (Green) Is a breather or another filler if using the S16 Oil Filler cap, Yellow is the main Filler point

4. Low Oil Pressure light, The pressure goes just above the oil filter with the blanking plug which can be used on the Oil level Blank

5. Purple goes to the Cam cover

6. Oil Temp (In sump)

Excellent thanks miles. Can I just block the green bit off then as I'm not using the S16 filler?

No, I take it to the side of the 1.9 Oil Filler tower as these engine's like to breathe, The tube goes' right into the sump but has a hole where the old Alloy block smaller breather is so this will have the same effect

Just to reinforce what Miles said (as I got to check my layout when I was down at his place by staring at his palette of many engines  )

1) The pipe top right on the cam cover (not circled) is a breather connected straight down to the purple pipe on the block

2) Red is/was oil level just bung it up as you've suggested

3) Both green & yellow are breather/oil filler combos that pipe up into the filler stack's larger two lower inlets

4) Oil pressure sender (to gauge) goes about 4inches directly above the oil filter (it's shown in my pics)

5) Oil pressure switch (to wng light) is turquoise as you've said

6) Oil temp sender in sump

7) Knock sensor as stated (I never had one)

P.S. Nice workshop you jammy bugger. Cats can't even swing mice round my garage. Soon be out of there though.

Excellent thanks for the help. One quick last question. Can I use the oil pressure sender out of my 8v?

I got lucky with the garage, its where my boss used to keep his RS6 when he came to work in it. It just lives at home now so the garage is empty and I get to use it in exchange for a couple of bottles of wine every so often

You'll need to check thread size but otherwise it'll work fine. However I'm pretty sure it won't fit.

This is a bit off topic but did anyone ever try blocking off the block filler and relocating it either to the valve cover (rocker cover) or running a separate resevoir for oil?

I remember on my PUG that oil filler rubber hose ALWAYS leaked.

Miles has done that before I believe. And of course you get that cam cover luxury when you have a GTi6 head. But that pipe near the filter also acts as a breather remember, so you could leave it there as that only & fill up elsewhere like you suggested.

The Oil pressure gauge is different I'm afarid, You can find them thou in 306 XSi's (Phase 1's for sure) S16, 405 Mi16 (Ph2) ZX Volcane's, Some Xantia's

Would be much nicer to run a braided AN-10 line to a vented resevoir mounted somewhere on the firewall. Not so?
