jtek 0 Posted March 9, 2008 I am getting on track again in a few weeks and i would like to start sorting out the stoppers on the front of my 1600. These are the standard brakes with standard pads at the moment, and they lasted out ok on the last track day, but with future plans i figured i may as well sort something bigger and better out. So here are my queries: -I know i need either 1900 or base hubs to run bigger brakes, but will i lose front track width by running 1900 hubs? i had a feeling they gave a narrower track but correct me if i am wrong. -Baring in mind also the fact that i may well transplant a bigger engine in the future, are the 1600 shafts significantly weaker? if so i may aswell change over to these now. -If i do choose to go for a bigger front setup (probably 266mm discs and calipers) will i need a bigger MC? -does anybody run significant power gains on the standard 1600 brakes with just uprated pads/fluids? or are they just too small? any opinions will be greatly appreciated thanks
Tom Fenton 1,541 Posted March 9, 2008 If your completely standard brakes lasted OK on your last trackday then I'd be inclined to either leave them alone as they are up to it, or possibly uprate the pads for some Mintex 1144 or Ferodo DS2500, bleed the system with fresh good quality fluid and then leave them alone! Uprated pads such as the ones mentioned really do give a noticeable braking performance increase over standard pads, the trade off is that they can wear down more quickly. The only other mod you could do is to fit braided brake lines. My 1600 has standard brakes with braided lines and stops pretty well TBH. Make sure the rear drums are in good order as they do contribute to the overall stopping capacity of the car. If you do decide to change to 1900 hubs then you will need to change to 1900 shafts at this time as the 1600 shafts won't fit any more (too small). The 1900 shafts are definitely stronger IMO. The 1900 hubs are slightly narrower but if you are using 1900 wheels you won't notice any adverse effect.
jtek 0 Posted March 9, 2008 yeah i am half tempted to just change to some m1144's for the time being and put some new fluid in. I already have braided lines and the rear drums and shoes are little over 5k old, and the front calipers were new recon items last year aswell so maybe i will make the most of them cheers
