hey guys

just getting the mi running, and it starts smoking about 30 secs after it starts up. it idles fine, and pulls well, oh and its on carbs too.

ive filled the oil to the top mark with new semi 40w10. the engine has been sat for quite a few months in a dry garage.

any ideas? cheers, deano

What colour smoke?

If blue could be stem seals, if black unburnt fuel, if white water.

how far have you driven the car? Could be condensation in the pipe. Also has anything got into the pipe from a sick engine, for example oil/coolant etc? I had fitted my rebuilt Mi16 into my car which previously had a HG Failure 1.9 8v, as a result the cooland found its way into the exhaust pipe, and once a little warm started to burn off and emit a strange greyish smoke from the exhaust. Had me a bit worried!!! After it had warmed right up it had burnt all the coolant off and all was well!!

Take it for a drive.

It will just need clearing out. Any engine thats sat for months will need doing.

Thats something i can talk from personal experience many times.

If its still doing it after 30 mile drive, then start to look a bit more into it.

ok cheers guys.

boldy, ive used pipes and parts from several engines, so that might have happened.

alistair, only taken it for a quick spin, as its not MOT'd yet, so not had a chance to do any millage what so ever.

would it do the engine any damage to drive it with nacked stem seals?

thanks, dean

btw its blue smoke, and it only appears about 30 secs after starting. i thought failing stem seals would give smoke out pretty much straight away.

ive been told it could be a cracked piston ring. what do you guys think? really really annoyed with this.

Could be all of thoae - but just leave it idling for about 30mins - probably all go away.

i have sadly, and it doesnt go away at all. when i drive it, and give it a bit of throttle, s*ite loads more smoke appears

is there any way to diagnose what the problems are without pulling the engine apart?

cheers, dean

it wont harm the engine if you drive it like this, as long as you dont drive it for so long all the oil burns and it seizes up!! (that will take a lot of driving) Realy from what i know (not a lot, just home mechanics) Valve stem seals will smoke on idle and overrun (holding in a low gear while decending a hill) NEVER OVERLOOK THE OBVIOUS SIMPLE THINGS BEFORE YOU TOTALY REBUILD THE ENGINE!!

Try a compression test and then add a little oil into the cylinders and do it again. If the compression rises significantly, then the rings are on the way out.
