Ignition Problems!

Hello

 

My 1988 1.6 Gti has left me stranded a couple of times. It has cut out with no misfire and then won't start again due to no spark.

 

I changed the ignition amp and it ran fine for a few days then it cut out again and wouldn't restart. After the second break down the RAC suggested that it may be a bad connection in the loom at the bend under the ignition coil. Moisture may have built up etc as when he wiggled the loom, the car fired up again temporarily. I disected the loom but found no problems & bodged it all back up with insulating tape.

 

I thought It may be a bad conection in the ignition amp plug but it starts fine after I wiggle it all around.

 

Pulling my hair out with this as it's hard to diagnose. the car seems to run fine, and will only cut out when you least expect it!

 

Anyone have any suggestions or anyone in the Bristol area who could have a look (For cash of course) as this is doing my swede in.

hiya i had a similar problem with my cti not wanting to start and kept cutting out and i found mine was to do with 2 relays packing up on me 1 was the fuel pump relay and the second was the starter motor relay both are positioned under the dash near the ecu

 

i suggest try changing these, the starter motor relay is a fused realy which i found in halfords for £6.99 and the fuel pump relay i got one for £3.00 at a breakers yard from another gti (not telling them it was a fuel pump relay because it would have cost alot more than that) for £10 not bad goin i think worth a try or if you know someone with another gti ask to try there relays in your car.

Problem is not with fuel though as I don't get a spark after it's conked out. Definatly an electrical/Ignition problem

Check the wiring to the dizzy as these often get very brittle as they enter the dizzy, breaking or shorting togrther.

You think it'd be worth changing the coil & the paste on the back of the ignition amp too as there dowsn't seem to be any paste there?
