ecu temp sensor is probably the culprit.

Is it when the car is cold or all the time? Mine used to do this when cold, turned out to be a sticky cold start valve not letting enough air through. Worth a check

Try removing the throttle body, remove the idle speed screw, and then give the passageways a really good clean out with some carb cleaner. Worked well on my car.

Did it start doing this on its own, was it once OK, did it after some work carried out?

An air leak can also cause symptoms like this, commonly the bolt that holds the oil filler on as the drilling goes straight throught the manifold so leaving this out results in a significant air leak that is very hard to find.

Mine did this, seems to of stopped doing it since I played with ignition timing and idle speed (idles at just over 1k when fully warmed up now).

Check all the wiring, to make sure it is not moving in the bay when the car is slowing down and shorting on the engine/bodywork. Does the rev counter suddenly drop, as if so this could well be the case as had this on my 1.6. It was an easy fix of insulation tape near the top enginge mount.
