Bakes100 20 1 Cars Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) Hi I have Spax shocks and springs all round on my 205 and as per usual they are very crashy over the bumps on the front! If i fit better - progressive springs would this cut down the crashyness?? as i cant really afford new shocks as well as springs! If so what are the best springs people recommend?? im looking at about 25-30mm lower than standard. Any help would be appreciated Thanks Edited March 4, 2008 by Bakes100
Anthony 1,003 Posted March 4, 2008 In my experience, it's the dampers rather than the springs that cause the crashiness on Spax setups Certainly I've swapped a couple of cars over from Spax to Koni dampers now, and in both cases the owners were amazed at the difference it made to comfort and roadholding - indeed, one of them actually threw the Spax in the bin as he refused to sell them on eBay because he felt they were so bad they were dangerous! paul205mi16 4 Posted March 4, 2008 I Now have Eibach springs on my Spax front dampers, these have not improved the ride atall. It must be the dampers, that is what i'm gonna swap next.
Bakes100 20 1 Cars Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) Yea i noticed they didnt seem to perfom that well as so called "sports" suspension and dont seem to be at all comfortable either! I was hoping i could get away with just springs. Which spring & shock setup would you recommend??, i have a large lump of iron under the bonnet so is there any springs specifically for the extra weight or is it negligable (sp) ?? thanks Edited March 4, 2008 by Bakes100
jonnie205 1 Posted March 4, 2008 GTi6 shocks are a nice cheap option which actually work very well. Koni or billy sprintline are very good if you have more to spend

jonnie205 1 Posted March 4, 2008 You have to bolt the drop link in from the other side other than that they go straight on. I have a vgc set if your if interested
Bakes100 20 1 Cars Posted March 5, 2008 oh i see not too much of an issue then. Another thing after looking online the cheaper spax kit seems to be black and non adjustable, whereas the more expensive ones are adjustable and yellow. The ones on my car are yellow with red springs, but dont seem to have any adjustment?! Were the older kits all yellow or is adjustment different on the older ones? thanks
sorr 0 Posted March 6, 2008 (edited) Certainly I've swapped a couple of cars over from Spax to Koni dampers now, and in both cases the owners were amazed at the difference it made to comfort and roadholding - indeed, one of them actually threw the Spax in the bin as he refused to sell them on eBay because he felt they were so bad they were dangerous! That was me. In my opinion Spax ruined my car and if you hit a bump mid corner things became interesting and airbourne, even though they were set to full soft. I would bin the Spax purely on saftey grounds regardless of the cost to replace. That is very easy for me to say if cash is tight, but I really think they are that bad. Even a 2nd hand set of quiet worn standard shocks and springs will be leagues ahead of the Spax I had on my car. Edited March 6, 2008 by sorr
kilauea 7 Posted March 9, 2008 KYB AGX shocks are very good. Not crashy at all and easy adjusted to suit. And they are cheap - about £250 for 4 dampers from buypartsby.com
Batfink 201 Posted March 9, 2008 i personally found their springs to be a load of rubbish
