Mi16 Gearbox Indentification

Is there a visual difference between mi gearbox and 1.6/1.9 8v 1s? Also does anyone know what job it is to remove the mi flywheel pickup teeth to reduce weight?

There are no visual external clues as to what a gearbox is except for if the selector arm is a different shape but if its been changed previous for fitting into a 205 you can't tell.

 

Only way to get a rough idea is by removing the diff housing cover to see what numbers are stamped on the crown wheel to give an idea of the final drive ratio.

 

Never tried removing the timing teeth but I've heard a good whack with a cold chisel between the starter & timing ring will seperate it get it off.

 

Coudn't you just use an 8v flywheel without the timing ring?

As said there's no 100% way, But the case is different with the reverse light being in the open as such where the 8v's are in a recessed in a hole along with the Nut to hold the reverse gear shaft in place.

The TD's run the same case too

the casing should have more ribs on the bottom plus there is no cutout as such where bellhousing meets block on top of box,

Id say best & easiest way would be taking out the oil bung and marking one of the teeth with a marker pen, put it in 5th gear and turn the main shaft and count the teeth. Im not sure how may teeth are on the 4.4 crown wheel but im sure someone will post it.

There are 62 teeth on the crownwheel for a 4.4 FD. (14 x 62 should be stamped on the crownwheel if you take the diff casing off)
