Limited Slip Diff Be1 Gearbox

Recommended Posts

hi

have done a search, but can't find answer to my question. ;)

i keep reading about people who have fitted an lsd to there be3 gearbox, but have yet to read about anyone who has fitted one into a be1.

am i right in thinking it will fit anyway? :)

i also see on the rare occasion people advertising them for sale, either on ebay or through the forums, but they always seem to state 'for be3'

i have a 1.6 be1 gearbox which i'd like to fit an lsd, or do i have to do a conversion involving be3 box, clutch cable, gear linkage and clutch pedal

thanks

To my knowledge they all fit BE1 boxes as well. Ive had a quaife ATB and latterly a Gripper in my BE1 without any hassle

Any diff made to fit a be3 will fit a be1, there is no difference in that part of the box.

Not all diffs are a direct fit into either box though, the tran-x and some grippers need minor mods to the casings to fit. The quiafe fits fine in all boxes.

I don't know about others such as Kazz, Bacci and ZF.....but i'm sure someone on here could help.

I have had a Tran X in both my Be1 and Be3 box without any issues.

I had a tran-x in both a be1 and be3 box and theres no real issues with fitment. Just a little bit of grinding needed to be done tn both the diff cover and the gearbox to allow the drivers side of the diff to rotate without contact. On the gti-6 box the diff cover went pourous when ground back. You could see the ali was beginning to crack up before even starting to grind the little amounts off. I used some jb weld stuff to seal the outside. Been fine for 3 years like that.

As said the LSD will fit and BE1, BE3 & BE4 Box. Just done a couple of Tran X diff's this week and they fit fine with some minor case fitting!

I've run Tran-X & Quaife diffs before for road and rallying. The Tran-X is a slightly better diff as adjustable but needs re-building now & again, it also clunks abit on lock. The quaife is also a great diff but should never need re-building and great in a road car.

Chris H, not so, I had to dremel off a bit of the inner casing on my BE3 to fit my quaife but only a 5 minute job

Its not that bad a job. I did mine with the box still on. I had to undo the alternator so it dropped down, unbolt the lower engine mount and put a scissor jack between the engine and the subframe to tilt it forward, may have trouble if your radiator isnt moved forward enough though. Remove driveshafts, remove diff housing, take out current diff, swap over crown wheel, refit with your new diff bearings. The bit I had to mill off is shown below, this is on the inside of the diff housing, gearbox side, ie NOT the bit you remove, only about 1cm of it had to go. The diff seemed to go in ok but I did it back up with 2 bolts, slid a driveshaft in and it wouldnt turn so make sure you try that before bolting everything back in! I had never heard of quaifes needing the housing modified like this, only plate ones
