Mi16 Help, Non Start

Recommended Posts

hi guys, today my mate got a mi16 205 cheap but wont run.We had look and have no spark and no fuel.If i bridge one of the relays behind drivers headlight i get fuel coming out but thats about it.This car has the 16v wiring loom with 2 row ecu and was possibly thinking this is at fault.Any ideas, i have noticed we have no power goin to crank sensor but have power goin to igntion coil and no spark from it though.Hope this makes sense lads.

Hiya fella

I'm still learning about these engines myself as i'm rebuilding my own.

You say there is no power to the crank sensor. I've been told that if this sensor is not working then the engine will not start. It needs this so the ECU can work out when to send the sparks. Might be the best place to start.

Replace/bridge the other relay (ie not the fuel pump one) - that controls power to the ECU and various sensors. Otherwise, try a different crank sensor to rule that out as they can and do fail (giving no injection/spark)

If you've got power to the coil then switched ignition is present, and if the fuel pump works when the relay is bridged, the permenant live also must be present and working.

Now I could be wrong here and stand to be corrected, but is the Mi crank sensor not a VR type, meaning that there is supposed to be no power to it?

Good point - I was thinking of digital sensors again.... I've corrected above post now :(

Glad I am not going mad. The Mi sensor is misleading in a way, as VR sensors usually only have a 2 pin connection, whereas the Mi sensor has three pins, I'm assuming one of them is shielding.

You can test the Mi sensor to see if its working BTW, connect a multimeter set to AC volts across it, and then crank the engine on the starter motor. If you see a reading in mV (milli Volts) when the engine is turning and nothing when it is not then it is working OK.

thanks lads for replies. I had this car in years ago when previous owner had wired the mi loom up wrong and i redid it with the two brown plugs. However i cannot find the wiring that i did so only think someone else has been playing around over last couple years.Anyway am i right in sayin the fuel pump relay and injection relay on the mi16 loom are the 2 by the drivers headlight with 2 fuses next to them. When i turn ignition on the relay up by the expansion bottle in black box clicks for some reason.I have no fuel pump and no spark.

If it's never ran, it might be worth checking that they haven't made the schoolboy error of mixing up the crank sensor and TPS wiring - crank sensor is the thicker/stiffer one due to the shielding.
