Mi16 Crank Oil Seals

Recommended Posts

Guest GLENNS

Hello Guys , first post :D , I'm sure i was registered on here ages ago , maybe it got deleted, anyway ...

I have a 1.9 205 fitted with the ali block 1.9 MI16 engine, rebuilt it ages ago and finally got around to

running it in, done a few miles in it but its developed a couple of oil leaks, looked to be front and rear crank seals

probably cos i re-built using pattern seals, so whipped the engine out last weekend and changed the seals to OEM ones.

the rear seal looks ok now, but its leaking from the blasted end cap sides !!! Grrrrrrrr, but thats easy enough to sort.

the thing that has me puzzled is that even with a OEM seal the front is leaking, i have no idea how i could have put this

in wrong, used a little instant gasket, cleaned everything up slid and pressed it in evenly using the crank end bush,

anyway , tips on fitting these seals and sorting these leaks are what i need, any special technique i should be using ??

Thanks in advance

Glenn :)

I have come across this problem before....

Make sure that the part of the shaft that the seal runs on is totally clean with no rough nicks or scratches.

Over time the lip of the seal can wear a very slight groove onto the end of the shaft....I have seen this on crankshafts & camshafts, have a close look as this could be your problem.

This groove is often enough to stop the oil seal from sealing on the shaft.

If this is your problem you can try not pushing the seal fully home if that's an option!... this will put the lip of the seal in a different position on the shaft!

Always make sure the seal & shaft is well lubricated when a new seal if fitted...I have seen people fit seals dry....there has to be some oil to lube the seal!
