Oil Pressure Issues

My apparent lack of oil pressure, has got me confused, so I decided to track back what I have done.

 

The last time i had reasonable oil pressure was before I changed the thermostat housing for the coil pack type .

 

So , is it possible that the new housing is not flowing the oil ?

 

I can't see anything else that has changed since then that could affect the oil system . Does anyone have a schematic of the oil flow in the XU9 engine ?

 

Is it possible to have oil pressure one day , and it drop so dramatically through a bearing going at idle speeds ?

 

Or does it point to the oil pump ?

 

Questions , Questions , I woke up at 5 this moring with all these scenarios going through my head !

I think your first point of call should be borrowing a master guage from a garage so you can asscertain how much oil pressure you actually have. I have had it before on one engine ive put together where ive started them up, the pressure light has gone straight out, but it has taken around 10 seconds of idling for the actual guage to move. How long have you had yours running?

About 5 minutes since i did the housing change secs .

 

even blipping the throttle didn't lift the needle past the first mark .

 

The OE low pressure light goes out now , though i know thats only 8 psi

I'll second a manual guage - the guage on my dash barely moves past the first mark but I've got a Tim guage under the hood that confirms I've got plenty of pressure, even when on a hot idle.

Sounds like the sender is knackered to be honest, as there is no other apparent reason for a sudden loss of oil pressure, you have made no changes that would affect it judging by what you have said. A master guage will certainly confirm this. If you actually had no oil pressure id expect it to sound terrible when revved and the light to be flashing up like a christmas tree.

Yet a mech pressure gauge, only £30 or so, thinkauto do one, or pugracing do a with all the right fittings kit too, which is good, (I've got that)

 

the std sensors are notoriously rubbish, more vague than a politician and slow to react than the UN, my std 1600's pressure takes apparently 15-20secs to build :s

Right , I think I may have found the reason for my lack of pressure .

 

I took the sump pan off this morning to replace the rod bolts and check the bearings , and found that the chain drive could be moved by hand with the crank not rotating.

 

The crank pulley bolt was slightly loose , giving only limited drive to the oil pump .

 

What a crazy design relying on only friction on the sprocket!!!

 

Will rebuild this week and see what happens
