Will it lessen understeer or make it worse? Its going down 55 at the front.

Cheers:)

Depends what you do to the rear, 55 sounds too much though.

Dont worry about the height - its a DTurbo and sits up at the front. 55mm wont even take the tops of the tyres level with the arches...

On my MI it was set up by spooks at 55 at the front and 65 at the rear.....seriously low....too low.

It constantly rubs on the rear arche's when cornering over bumpy roads etc...

The front seem's fine, but very stiff.

I would say aslong as you dont come close to the arch you'll be ok (if you can stand the bumpy ride)

On the understeer side of things.....im not sure, I had a original 1.6 GTi and that understeered like a **** (standard 1.6 alloys), on my MI i have 405 wheels which are wider etc...and there is hardly any understeer in the dry.....but then you could get some decent tyre's which do make a massive diffrence e.g top end toyo's

My otherwise standard 1.9 GTI had been dropped something stupid like 65mm at the front before i bought it, with the rear adjusted to suit. It understeered, oversteered, did everything bar get round a bend without any drama.

I think the key is what you do to everything else, ive just finished putting it back together, its now got 309 front running gear, bilsteins, -40mm springs, and grp n top mounts.

The back end is stock, but i intend to move over to 309 beam at some point to compliment the stiffer front springs.

Id defo get it tracked up afterwards fella, are you going to lower the rear beam too?

The act of lowering a car won't have a massive effect either way - for a given spring/damper setting it will produce less body roll, therefore less weight transfer and perhaps less oversteer in the dry as it, but maybe more in the wet.

It is the fact that you are stiffening up the springs/dampers at the same time. Too stiff and you will just understeer everywhere (no weight transfer) especially in greasy conditions.

But a little bit stiffer would help you in the dry - especially if you are putting on wider profile tyres as this will load up the suspension more than the stock skinnys.

There are a lot of variables to consider, Stu Da Rude is right - it depends on what you do to everything else.

Well from the top of the rear wheel to the arch is 45mm. (on 195/50R15s)

From the top of the front tyre to the arch is a whopping 100mm, which is why I went for the 55mm drop, to try and get things level. 100-55=45

When budget allows, I'll get some good quality shocks all round.

I know its not great to use standard shocks, but I'll get better when I have saved up again.

When you lower it you automatically get a bit more negative camber which will help a bit.

but your further in to the camber curve and it'll start positiveising after the wishbone is level.
