Guest rexer200 Posted February 26, 2008 I've just purchased a 1.6 CTi 1990 and I'm slowly working through a few of its issues. There is a slight knocking over very rough roads from the front end so I assumed it was the front ARB drop links. On inspection I don't have any drop links, the ARB just goes straight into the middle of each wish bone - is this the same as XS suspension? On jacking the front up I was able to move each wheel up and down by hand and noticed both suspension top mounts were knocking between the 2 metal faces. - can I just get some replacement rubber rings for these and are they the same as a GTi? Guest rexer200 Posted February 27, 2008 Yes and yes! So can someone clarify what front end suspension parts are the same? 1.6 CTi vs GTi Top mounts - Same Lower wishbones - different Anti-roll bar - different Suspension struts - ? Springs - ? Track rod ends - ? Knuckles (Hubs) - ?
RossD 44 Posted February 27, 2008 (edited) 1.6 CTi vs GTi Top mounts - Same Lower wishbones - different Anti-roll bar - different Suspension struts - Different - No lug for the ARB droplink although you can use the GTi struts on the CTi Springs - Different Track rod ends - Same Knuckles (Hubs) - Different - Most likely base model hubs Edited February 27, 2008 by RossD

Like many on here I just switched the lot (subframe, struts, wishbones, arb and droplinks ) straight from a gti. Same hubs but the mountings for the brake flexi (and the flexi itself?) are different, too! (ps - you fitting a tow-bar to a cti?)
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted February 27, 2008 The Hub's are from a 1.6 GTi as are the shafts
Guest rexer200 Posted February 27, 2008 Firstly thanks everyone for the replies and clarification, I'll start by getting the rubber for the top mounts from GSF listed at £22 - does this do both sides or do I need 2 sets? (ps - you fitting a tow-bar to a cti?) Yep, I guess you saw I bought one off Ebay. It's not going to rip the CTi apart is it? The one I bought was off a GTi so I hope it fits. The plan is just to tow a motorbike trailer with 200kg bike so nothing too heavy :-/

It'll fit fine - If you want a pic of the holes in the boot floor for fitting reference, I'm happy to oblige

Beastie 1 Posted February 28, 2008 This comes up from time to time - people assume that the CTI takes the same suspension as the XS because it looks identical to the naked eye. Do be aware of one more issue other than those already mentioned: The included angle between the stub axle and the strut is different so that the correct steering scrub radius is obtained using the 1.6GTI alloys. If you fit the stub axle assemblies from an XS then the steering scrub radius will only be correct if you fit XS wheels as well. The reason that the CTI holds the road better than the XS is that it has different wheels *with* the steering geometry to match them.
