tonycj 0 Posted February 26, 2008 Got in my car this morning (GRDT) after a busy night shift only to sit on a wet seat! on closer inspection i found the front corners of my headlining soaking and even dripping. i'd like to know the likely cause please? the sunroof handle is tight, the front drain holes look empty, and the sunroof inflatable seal looks in realy good condition with no significant marks or dirt on the sunroof that could cause a leak. look forward to your replies. Cheers, Tony
McDude 33 Posted February 26, 2008 Most likely culprit is the little rubber seals where the handle attaches to the glass. They are known to perish, so even if the handle is tight, water can still get in.
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted February 26, 2008 Also check the seal around the aerial base, and the windscreen rubber.
tonycj 0 Posted February 27, 2008 Think ive got the job nailed, washed the car today so it was clean then started my investigation. all drain points are clear (now), then poured half a litre on water over the aerial base, had a look and there was 3-4 drips of water in the car, so i deducted if half a litre was 3-4 drips then 10 hours of rain the other night would let in quiet a significant amount of water! Hope this is now sorted as i took the aerial off cleaned it siliconed the base and stuck it back on. ill let you know how it goes! Tony.
tonycj 0 Posted March 21, 2008 Anyways, another update! Got in again to a wet seat, now im realy getting sick of this! decided to take out the headlining, and found the rear drain points of the sunroof completely rotted through, got some pipe and sealed this in the sunroof frame, then sealed the rubbeer drain pipe onto the pipe again. water tight and job done. Got into a wet seat again that next night! decided to sit in the car when it was raining and see where this stupid leak is, and noticed that where the sunroof body meets the roof of the car, was getting wet, so decided to take all the outside trim off the car and sealed the outer framework round the whole roof. now waiting for rain!!!! i cant tell you how sick i am of this leak! tonycj 0 Posted June 21, 2008 So just to let you know, i had to take the sunroof frame out. I drilled the rivets out and pulled out the sunroof, i cleaned the entire mating surfaces and used a sealer designed for fuel tanks, (supplied by my employer)! Then riveted my sunroof in again, and waited for the rain. Low and be hold the sunroof is now watertight, although its not from trying i cant believe its now finished! This seemed to go on for ages. So now this chapter is closed!! Many Thanks for all contributions, Tony.
gerlewislewis 0 Posted June 22, 2008 Now that youve solved it im gonna hi-jack this thread. Tom you say "Also check the seal around the aerial base, and the windscreen rubber." Well mine has a few drips coming from the interior light, but ive sealed the sunroof handle with silicon and that area seems dry. So do you think the aerial handle would be the most likely culprit? Does it just unscrew from the outside? or do I need to remove the headlining? Ger
tonycj 0 Posted June 22, 2008 Take a straight blad screw-driver and easy out the interior light, pour some water over the aerial base and if you get drips forming on the threads below the aerial then there is your problem. Unsrew the nut on the bottom of the aerial, and the aerial will pull off the body of the car, give both mating suurfaces a clean, meths or otherwise. then squeeze some silicone sealer round the base of the aerial and press firmly back onto the body of the car and screw back on the retaining nut. Job done, wait till it rains and check! Hope this helps, Tony.
