Cutting Out

Recommended Posts

Guest Russw

Hi chaps, got a problem that has gradually got worse over the past week.

My 205 mi16 has decicided it wants to cut out intermittantly (sp). It started when going round left hand corners(!), but now it hesitates and gets jumpy (more so after a good revving).

A mate thinks its the fuel pump or the fuel pump relay, but i don't want to go throwing money after money.

Has anyone got any ideas??

I have just changed the exhaust back to a standard gti one as the other as too noisy, but the fault was there before this, but the jumpyness has started since - too musch back pressure??

Thanks

Check the two relays on the Mi loom, mine had an intermitent fault like this and it was a dry joint in one of the relays.

You can dismantle the relays if your tight (like I did, because I am) and just touch all the solder joints with a soldering iron. They do seem a bit fragile, mine played up after I dropped one of them, it was fine before.

Check to make sure the wires travelling between the engine and the drivers inner wheel arch are not shorting on the bodywork. This happened on my old 1.6 GTI and only happened when turning sharp left due to not properly cable tying them when I replaced the head gasket. This also cause my coil to eventual pack up too.

My tachymetric (fuel etc) relay played up leading to cutting out & non-starting. I bought a new relay, but when I had some spare time looked at the relay in detail. Prised off the plastic cover and checked the solder joints. To the naked eye they looked fine, but with a magnifying glass you could see a grey ring in the solder on 2 (my 205 does nothing by halves) of the joints. Re-soldered them & ... problem solved. So easily resolved if that is your problem.
