Drive Shaft Oil Seals

Recommended Posts

i am going to be doing mine on tonight, i have been told to use a flat blade screwdrier to remove, then to tap them in square when fitting, where abouts do i hit the flat blade screwdriver ? do i attack them from the edge ?, ,

also ive been told i can reuse what Gbox oil is left (only 2 days old), by putting it back in via the breather on top of the gearbox, what does this plug look like ?

Any other pointed greatly appreciated

If you just wedge the flat blade in behind the oil seal, then use the opposite side of it to lever the seal out. They arent in there too tight so this should work fine. Just make sure you dont gouge the seal land with the flart blade as you lever it out. The gearbox breather is pretty much in the centre of the gearbox next to the battery tray and is usually a black plastic hex plug, with a white plastic top cap.

You don't hit it with a screwdriver, use it to lever out the old seals being very careful to not damage the alloy gearbox casing.

All this is covered very well in the haynes, if you don't have one I suggest getting one (or at least downloading it...)

Didnt read that bit properly, yes dont refit the new ones with a flat blade! They need to be knocked in flush with the casing, so a suitable bit of wood is ideal as it covers the whole seal so you can knock it in square, and is soft enough to not damage anything.

Make sure that you use genuine Pug oil seals as the ones from GSF etc. don't seem to last 5 minutes before they start leaking.

Can't say I've had any trouble with GSF ones I've fitted, one's done 20,000 & the other 7,000 miles, no leaks.

You will probably have them done by now but what the Hell ;) .....

I've also used GSF driveshaft seals a few times with no problems...so I would recommend them...they're probably a lot cheaper the original Pug item as well.

Before fitting the new seals dip them in clean oil & give them a shake to get the excess off....I also wipe a smear of oil onto the casing where the seal will go.

Make sure the seal is square on to the casing as you fit it & any knocking in should be done with a big socket that rests on the outside edge of the seal as this has metal under the rubber of the seal....if you haven't got a socket the correct size a piece of wood like taylorspug recommends will do fine.

Make sure the new seals are fully home into the casing...take a look at the position the old seals are in before you remove them so you know roughly where the new ones shoud sit!

When putting the driveshafts back in put a smear of oil around the part of the shaft that the oil seal runs on after making sure it is nice & clean....be careful when passing the splined part of the shaft through the oil seal not to let the splines rub against the lip of the seal as this can damage the seal...most seals have built in guards or a guard that you remove after the spline part of the shaft has passed the seal to help stop this happening.

When the part of the shaft that the seal runs on is ready to go into the seal turn the shaft as you apply a pushing force & the shaft will easily slip into the seal.

When filling the box with oil via the breather or reverse light switch hole you will have to pour it in very slowly with a funnel or it will end up glugging & you will end up with more on the floor!

Regards.

well, i attacked this job today, will put the car back together tomorrow. I brought Genuine seals, however they were diffrent to the ones i removed.

the ones i removed had a white peice of plastic in them , and the new ones did not.

i took some pics just to show you anyway.

but yea i fitted them using a flat peice of wood and put this over whilst hitting them to get them in square, they are now in snug just like how they came out.

here are the pics

yey thats cool then , happy now, the seals now fit virtually 100% flush, but jst have a small ridge all the way around however this is even all the way around so i am guessing this is normal and they are seated correctly
