Bought Myself A Gti6...what Do I Keep From It.

Recommended Posts

Phil H

Just bought myself a GTI6 with 85k on the clocks and despite doing lots of searching on here, I couldn't find a definitive list of what to keep and what to bin in regards to using the engine for a 205 conversion.

I read that the engine needs to be running, or at least ignition on to unlock the ECU, but the key looks like it has a transponder and it has a keypad imobiliser too. What's that all about?

I may have bitten off more than I can chew here, as only ever done MI conversions !

The is a thread on here where a lot of the fitting details, which I can go through, but I don't want to send the car off without taking something I may need a a later point.

Engine, loom, ecu, transponder, keypad & wiring, brakes, hubs, rear beam (24mm ARB) front struts, MC,

Don't think there's much else really.

If you know the keypad code then punch it in on the 306 and get the ignition on then unplug it whilst it's live. There's no need to get transponder and associated wiring then. Try and keep the diagnostic socket, bit of added grief but it maymake things alot easier if you have management problems in the future. The battery box is worth keeping aswell, keeps the ecu nice and protected then. Along with the items baz mentioned. Thats it as far as i can remember

...so I unplug the keypad while the ignition is on, not the ECU?

Disconnect the ecu with the ign live, but IF you do reconnect it again the immobiliser side will reactivate so once you have done it leave it disconnected.

Alistair is the master of these conversions round your way (He is in Kettering) so will be able to offer some advice.

No one has mentioned anything about engine mounts. Do you need fancy ones or a hybrid arrangement?

As i understand it, later top mounts seem to be shorter in height which is handy for MC clearance, and you'll need to extend the lower mount fork but otherwise you should be fine.

I've bought a PH1 GTI-6 breaker too, though I haven't had time to bring it to France yet to get the project started (though the turbo lump is out in prepa). As is typical with most breakers, I've neither the code, nor the keys B)

But I'm not too worried about all that - my main worry is what gearbox to use - I've been told by several people the lock becomes pathetic when you use the 6 speed in a 205. I turned up 20mm spacers when I fitted the Brembo brakes to allow me to keep the original wheels, but I doubt this will make too much difference.......Has anybody present got any experince with this?

What 'box are you planning to use Phil?

Regards to all, Rex

what's the master cylinder clearance like on the GTi-6 lump? any less/more of a problem than an Mi16?

Depends how you fit it,tight normally unless you use a few "Clearance" gaining techniques !

I used a gti-6 box for a while. Good fun until you corner. T-junctions are a pain, mini roundabouts are impossible. I avoided multistorey carparks as I didnt think the car would make it round the bends.
