Handbrake Cable Wont Go Back :0z

Recommended Posts

got a bit of a puzzler

i took my rear beam off to fit solid mounts to it, pulled the handbrake cable out both sides, undid calipers and pulled beam off ok

now ive put the beam and calipers back on and the handbrake cable just wont go back in one side! B)

the passenger side went in fine, the drivers side is being a biatch!! theres plenty of slack in the cable casing, its slotted through the hole fine - althou there is about 3mm of ridged metal showing before the stopper - but thats the same as it look on the other side

i can push the caliper arm backwards but even then it doesnt reach and i havent managed to co-ordinate pushing the caliper and pulling the cable enough to slot it through - and dont want to have the handbrake stuck on one side if its such a struggle

any ideas what could be wrong please before i start undoing the handbrake from inside the car?? B)

you need to tap the outer cable's fittings into the holders fully.

also check that some muppet hasn't pulled the lever up...

no idea if this'll help in the long run but it might be worth applying some copper grease too as, once corrosion has set in, the ferrules on the end of the cable can be a right pain to get back out of the caliper again

There is a left and right hand side (at least on teh 1.9). Have you got them the wrong way round?

I also thought that but she says she will have to undo them from inside so I'm assuming she never removed them from there, so wouldn't of mixed them up.

Usually find adjusting molegrips to the right size, twatting them to "relocate" the dooberry the easiest method.

now discovered cracked flexi hoses going to caliper :) why is a job never simple lol!! going to take beam off and underseal the floor while im waiting on new flexis

is it a major job to re-route the brake pipes all inside? or would i be better off just fitting new flexis and bunging it all back - needs to be fully functioning in the next couple of weeks

It's not major work to run brakelines inside the car, but with the amount of junk you tend to put in your car going to shows, trackdays etc I don't think I'd bother as you risk damaging one of the lines if something falls on it. Not really convinced there's any major benefit either unless you're rallying the car and risk external brake lines being damaged by rocks etc.
