Electrical Issues With Screenwash Pump And Lights

Recommended Posts

BamBamGTI

Hi guys, more electrical woes here. The pug needs an MOT and I need to get the screenwash pump working. Changed the pump and still nothing working... Im no electrician, what could it be? I changed the fuse in the glovebox, and checked the wiring at the column and it seems all ok. Short of tracing the wires back to the fusebox I dunno what I can do... change the column stick?

Also I have never been able to 'flash' the headlights, only put them on fullbeam. Is that a possible column switch fault??

Could be column switch.

However have a look at the big earthing point near to the headlamp. Clean this up or better still remove and remake all the connections, you'll find it will sort out a whole host of issues.

Do the same on the other side too!

For the screenwash pump check the earth point on the headlamp panel. These often corrode and cause problems, I replaced it with a different earthing point on my car to solve a few electrical gremlins. Have a look for a thread by me with "saved from the scrapyard" in the title.

As for the headlamps, with the lights turned off pulling the stalk towards you will make them flash, and the stalk will release back to the off position. With the lights on dipped beam pulling the stalk will turn them to high beam, pulling again will put them back to dipped. This is just how a 205 works.

For the screen wash pump I also find that the two spade connectors that plug into it corrode too. Worth removing them from the plastic housing with a small terminal screwdriver, clean them up and refit them. Put a bit of Vaseline onto them before pushing the connector back onto the pump, stops them corroding again. :)

looked at the earth behind the headlight today, seems in pretty good nick, no real corrosion going on there. I looked at the wiring coming from the pump and it appears just to head back up towards the bulkhead to the fusebox. Im gonna try replacing the stick on the column cause ive run out of ideas what else it could be. Ill probably find out GSF have given me a dud pump...
