I have a 1990 G plate 1.6 205 GTi will I need the Bendix or Girling systems at the rear ? how easy are they to get to ? the process for changing safely ? what sort of time will it take ? anything else to look out for whilst doing the job ? ta Adam
welshpug 1,657 Posted February 21, 2008 I can't remember what the gti has offhand cylinder wise, but there's not much else you'd need apart from some brake fluid. you need to remove the rear drums to get at them, time depends on whether the unions and fixings want to come out of the cylinder easily, and how much of a lip there is on the drum. you should replace the hub nuts, but you can get away with swapping them from side to side as the part that's been staked in normally ends up in a different place. its good practice to strip the self-adjusting mechanism and handbrake lever (on the shoes) and rebuild it with a light coating of anti-seize.
