djinuk 2 Posted February 20, 2008 My 205 1.9 8v has never had the rear starter motor mounting bracket, how important is it to have this fitted, is it worth me sourcing one?

davemar 16 Posted February 21, 2008 I didn't know there was one! I just replaced my starter and it was held on by the three bolts in the gearbox housing.
ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted February 22, 2008 Anyone know why the GTi starter is so big anyway? they're cr*p IMO as mine is always f**king up! You can get smaller lighter and more powerful ones that don't need that extra support.
Rob Thomson 6 Posted February 22, 2008 [structural Engineer's Hat On] I don't think the bracket's got anything to do with the weight of the starter motor. It'll be designed to resist flexing that occurs due to the torque applied by the motor when it's operating. The more powerful the motor or the larger the engine (or greater compression etc) the more flex there's going to be and the more important that bracket becomes... [structural Engineer's Hat Off] Having said that, whilst my trusty old 309 had one fitted when I bought it, my Mi16 didn't and neither does my current 205. Given that you don't read thread after thread of people complaining about their ring-gear wearing out prematurely or the bellhousing snapping in half during cranking I don't think you should worry too much if you don't have one fitted. I was driving someone elses 205 once when a 100mm x 100mm ish chunk of bellhousing snapped off, the section in question by the starter motor. It came off when I put the clutch pedal down (BE1 box with the pivot bolted there) but I imagine it was the starter that caused the issue originally.
