Abs Wiring

post-10317-1203446475_thumb.jpgReading a recent post about cars failing their MOT for a non functioning ABS system I thought I’d better get round to fitting mine in properly! Something I’ve been meaning to do for getting on 2 years now

I took the complete braking system (front and rear complete with compensators and ABS already plumbed in) off a 1900 J plate GTI. The looms of the green gti (engine and interior) were replaced due to an aging/broken Cobra alarm and missing/badly patched sections. Since everything had been stripped it seemed the easier option. But the new loom didn't have this connector and by the time it was needed the other shell (and manky wiring) had been crushed

There was a 2 pin plug with a (thin) blue and (thicker) white wire which comes through the bulkhead (N/S where the ABS pump is fitted as standard) and this connects to the rest of the ABS loom.

Does anyone know where this connects to inside the car, I’m sure it was the fuse box somewhere. The wire numbers have smudged too which doesn't help

I have the plug and wrote the connection down, but 2 years have passed and the wiring diagram has long gone (Haynes doesn't have it in either)

So if anyone knows where these 2 wires join the interior loom (if that is where it goes) that would be great

Cheers,

Super Josh

To be honest, I wouldn't bother with the 205 ABS system. I considered fitting it (and this comes from someone who likes his Pug to have a few toys  ), but it is a very early system that only works on the front wheels, cuts in too soon and is prone to failing and getting spares is a bit of a problem. Add to that the hassle of fitting the rear load compensator, ABS front drive shafts and sensors. Seems like a lot of work for little gain.

I can't really help with your problem, but as a bit of 205 wiring loom advice. The internal wiring looms come in several sections, one part for the dash section, another for the rear light, wipers, HRW etc. another for the engine bay on the passenger side etc. You get the idea. They tend to come in different flavours depending on which additional options were specified, age and therefore Phase of the car. Do you have the loom that runs down the passenger side to the rear of the car? Because the ABS ECU is in the left hand side of the boot. Do you have the loom that runs down the engine side of the bulkhead with the heat shield over it? Have you installed the ABS driveshafts with the timing grooves in the CV joints?

I have seen people occasionally breaking 205s with ABS, so my advice would be to get complete wiring loom from one of these cars and replace it with the relevant one in yours. Might be worth placing a wanted ad.

A bit of advice on the fusebox, all of the plugs are polarised, so they can only plug in one location :) If the spare plug you have is meant to go in the fusebox it will be obvious.

Josh

ade 4wd

The two pin connector is only on later cars from 1990 on. White wire is switched 12V, blue wire goes to ABS warning lamp on dash.

Cheers for the replies guys, i'll have a look at wiring that up tomorrow evening if it stays light long enough.

I know the 205 abs is a bit crud but i can disconnect it if it acts up. Really its just so it's there for the MOT.

I fitted it because i got the suspension, brakes (+lines with 2 rear compensators and full wiring + ecu for abs) and shafts off a good donor car and thought it would be rude not to fit them all in one go

I've always said you don't really need abs and thats proberly why it's been at the bottom of my to-do list for ages.

But then i used to say that about PAS, EW and RC/L until i got this car which already had them :P

(I think the Saxo/106 uses a stand alone system too which acts on all 4 wheels though- could try that if your still after abs  )
