smokey 0 Posted February 17, 2008 Hiya guys I've finally got my Mi16 engine (thanks Gav!) But i've got a few questions before i start work on it. I've done some searches and spoke to a few peeps on here. So far i've decided to: Change Cam Belt and Tensioners Change Water Pump Change Shells Get camshaft polished (due to some surface rust) New head and Sump gaskets. New head bolts I had this confirmed by Matt over at QEP This car will only be used on the roads so I've been told by Matt and a few others not to worry about getting the sump baffled. My main questions are... Does anyone know where i can get the rubber section before the AFM modified so i can put a K&N filter on and squeeze it into the tight space? I was also wondering if i should use a water-oil cooler? I don't have one on my current 1.6 and nothing came with the Mi16 engine. I've been told its handy for road cars as it will heat up the oil quicker. I don't have an alternator or starter motor with the mi16, can i use my 1.6 ones, or would i be better off using something else? Also seeing its in bits i was thinking of cleaning it up. Whats the best use on it? Especially getting rid off the white oxidation from it breathing? Finally if I'm missing anything important let me know Thanks guys
nick 3 Posted February 17, 2008 Re AFM pipe, just cut it back with a Stanley knife, but remember to leave enough for the jubilee clip to grip onto. Nick
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted February 17, 2008 I have the inlet pipe from a BX GTi 16valve that will suit your purpose, I will put it in with the seats if you like. Water/Oil Cooler - Dont bother. Use the 1.6 Starter and Alternator. Clean up using rag's and petrol. Just go gentle on any fragile and rubber stuff. The sumps only cause a problem if you cheat and tilt the engine to put them in, so a baffled sum is not required in your case. I welded in a few into mine, but it is not really a big deal unless your engine is poorly fitted, thus, get your exhaust sorted. Oh, and be sure to run decent oil. smokey 0 Posted February 18, 2008 Ah thanks Orb that would be great. I've had the exhaust manifold modified so that i can put the engine in straight. So looks like i should be ok. What oil type should i use? Also just to check, will the 1.6 Starter and Alternator fit on normally, or do i need to mod them? Thanks
Mikey S 29 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2008 What oil type should i use? Also just to check, will the 1.6 Starter and Alternator fit on normally, or do i need to mod them? stick to a semi synthetic 10w40 oil. i use total quartz in mine and its fine. alternator and starter motor will fit with no mods whatsoever. just make sure you have the dowel that sits in the gearbox so it aligns the starter properly. mike

Thats what i use in my Astra too. What do you mean by "make sure you have the dowel that sits in the gearbox so it aligns the starter properly"? Thanks
Mikey S 29 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2008 top left hand bolt hole is recessed to accept a dowel. it sets the pinion backlash, without it, it will strip the ringear on the flywheel. mike

Or will i need to get a dowel for it?
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted February 18, 2008 it will be on the gearbox matey.
smokey 0 Posted February 19, 2008 it will be on the gearbox matey. Ah thanks Trouble is i'm doing all this research without actually looking at the thing!!
pee vee 1 Posted February 19, 2008 (edited) Hi Mate i'm local to you if you get stuck water-oil cooler (modine) DO bother! on a road car. they not only help regulate the oil temp, but help the oil warm up quicker too, as warm oil is better for the engine than cooler oil Incidentally, they are the same modine as used on Cosworth engines IIRC, and are reputed to be equivalent to approx 16 row air-oil cooler!!! (no i wasn't sure whether to believe it or not when i first heard it) Edited February 19, 2008 by pee vee
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted February 20, 2008 Personally wouldn't bother with an oil/water cooler, not really necessary. Never fitted one on any of the conversions I've done and not had any problems. Plus when your giving it beans can raise temps quite a bit and quite quickly.
