Jetting For Mi16

Recommended Posts

Coonper

Hi all, im new to this...

I have bought myself an mi16 running twin 40 dellorto's.

They were jetted for a 2.0l pinto so obviously no good for my mi16. It runs a little lumpy on idle and it can bog down sometimes so i assume its too rich.

The engine is standard, so i was wondering what jets i should use, and where to get them from?

I need them both setting up as well. Does anyone know who can do it??

Any advice greatfully recieved as i dont know much about them tbh...

Using the search function should bring up some threads but theres hardly anyone using 40's on a Mi16 as they are to small to give much/any extra power but you should find some people with quite tuned 150 ish bhp 8v's with 40's which may give an idea on jets

He did?! The only other one I have heard of is in Hungary! Got any more info, photos etc, please email me if so, darren@visagti.com

Mines an ex Grp N rally car which I got hold of in 2000 and put the Mi16 in. I have sprint and hillclimbed it since with a couple of trackdays

Yes, his was a C reg. He bought it as a standard GTI with the 1.6 8v. Then got bored of it and dropped the mi16 engine and box into it. It was the most unreiable thing he had ever owned, with the head gasket blowing 3 times in a year, no to mention the steering rack problems... This was about 10 years ago.

There was a few of them floating around at that time, however, none of them had the 16v lump.

I rememer him speaking to a guy in coventry with a red one, but as i was only 9 years old its not the most clearest of memories.

I have a few pics, but obviously not digital, if you want a look i could scan em for you...

I seem to remember they look awesome from the front with the twin head lights, but a bit ugly from the back.

Got any pics of yours??

No worries on the photos unless you are really bored heh. Must have just been bad luck with the engine and the rack is same as the 205 etc

They look head on and not so bad from the back although a bit weird as they are loads narrower at the rear than the front. There are some recentish photos here

Surely 40s are too small. Aren't the max choke size 32mm?

I am running 45s on mine and IIRC they are 36mm chokes.

40's are fine to run on a 1.9. Its a common mistake for people to think bigger is better.

if you follow the logic here, you surely cant get much more than 160bhp out of some 140's which is a bit pointless as pratically standard taking into account most 16v's are mid 150 at most out of the factory

oh dear :)

I had to just drive the boss's Lexus 220d thing back to work. So much turbo lag I nearly died rolling out of one junction in 2nd which would have been fine in either of my petrols and had to change down on some hills as it went off boost and I am used to plodding up them at 1500rpm sort of thing in my v6 mondeo but not in his car, downchange or grind to a halt!

Ive got an audi A4 diesel. Its a 2.5 tdi with 160bhp. And there is a lot of lag on that, but when the turbo's spinning you know its spinning! Its very torquey which gives you the impression your accellerating at a silly rate.

But yer, as you say, when its not boosting (under 1500rpm) its a bit rubbish tbh.

I'm running twin 40's on a 1.9 Mi16!! I havent completed the build yet but i have had my rebuilt engine running, only the exhaust manifold startet to glow red so im off to the garage now to try and sort it.

Your correct in saying 40s are fine for an Mi by the way as you can still fit a 36mm choke in these as mine have.

I havent got round to setting up my carbs proffesionally yet so i cant really help out, but please let me know how you get on. Below is a link to a page for the selection & tuning of DCOE Webbers.

I am trying to remember the settings and power from my mi16 after i fitted 45's.

They had 35mm chokes and these were switched to 38mm chokes.

When you consider 40 dcoes fitted with 36mm chokes flow no more air than ones fitted with 34mm chokes the results should be similar to my findings.

Found the print outs.

On 35mm chokes it made 160 bhp and 140 lbs/ft.

Air temp was a touch high and this was corrected to 170 bhp.

So little gain for all the effort involved. Hardly worth it when most mi16's make 165-168 on this set of rollers.

On 38mm chokes it made 183 bhp and 151 lbs/ft.

Still think 40's are big enough?

I ran mine on 45s with 36mm chokes, torque was great for standard cams. I doubt you'd gain more by having smaller chokes/bodies so you'd be better off going up if you can. More future proof aswell when you decide it's not quick enough

Do you use it round Coventry much? I've only seen a couple of 205s up there :D

Im gonna stick with the 40's and see how they feel. It is only my 2nd car after all, so dont need it too quick! Lol

Its not yet on the road mate. Where in coventry are you from?
