Coilover Spring Rates

Recommended Posts

Dan Ingram

I've fitted some DIY coilover conversions to my standard shocks. I originally ordered 250lbs springs but after doing some reading I decided they were going to be a bit hard so I ordered some 200lbs ones instead. I have them on the car now and they still seem overly hard and bouncy. I remember reading that standard springs are about 175lbs is that right? It just feels like the 200lbs are loads stiffer than the standard ones. I'm now tempted to order some 175lbs springs for my coilovers.

What rate springs are other people using and how do you find them?

Standard dampers.

If you're using standard inserts, you're damping and rebound settings will be way off for a 200lb spring rate causing the skittish ride. You need to buy some uprated inserts and fit them into your struts, Bilstein are the favoured option on here.

350lb :) can feel the broken back now! I've got 225lb springs on the Polo they're pretty good tbh. Will be going for the same on the RG eventually.

Yes but the car is for competition use - not really required for road use.

I've fiddled a bit today and made things a bit better. The problem is the height its at doesn't leave much suspension travel. Do non OE dampers have a shorter body on them (Bilstein, koni etc) ???

I run 285lbs on mine curently, but with suitable uprated rear rates, I'm jumping up to 350lbs this tiem but with different dampers and again rear beam.

You'll find you get more and more understeer if you don't uprate the rear to match.

Bilstien do shorter length dampers, as do Gaz.
