Oil Leak

Recommended Posts

Ethos

Hi guys,

I think the 205 has sprung an oil leak, gave it a new load of oil a while ago and realised last week that the oil level was just below minimum so ended up putting another litre in to get it just below the maximum mark.

Checked today and it seems to be back down to just below minimum :D

When filling I get a few drops underneath, but I was guessing theres also a leak under the filler.

Any tips / tricks on what to do? Don't want to be putting in a litre every week or so!!!!!

First thing you need to do is assertain where the oil is going! I take it it's not burning the oil, was the sump plug fully tightened when the oil was changed?

I don't think it's burning oil? Haven't seen any blue smoke out the back put it that way... its my girlfriends daily drive which is 3 miles away- she probably tops out at like 20mph too.

The sump plug was checked after filling and there was no leaking from it.

There was some oil dripping down from the filler region, but these seems to stop after 10-20 drops. This was about a month or two ago now though.

Just been out to check it again and it's a good 1-2cm below minimum :D It was just below max last week.

try running the engine to see if the leak is present when the oil is under pressure.

valve stem seals will be worn, to leak that much oil you would know about it

I took it for a little blast late last night, she was performing very nicely.

I Hope it's something simple :)

Will have to break the news that my girlfriend will have to catch the bus till it's sorted. Wish me luck :)

Oh, no she doesn't :) and it doesn't smoke when giving it beans off the roundabout :)

Put a clean sheet of cardboard underneath overnight and check for drips in the morning?

Good thinking, I know roughly where it drips from after i've put some oil in. But it SEEMS to stop after a few drops.

I'll put some cardboard down tonight, don't think it's going to rain!

Had a great play last night with it, if you take the left before county hall there's a great lane (I'm guessing you already know the route!!!).

Missing driving yours everyday yet? :)

Penweathers lane - follow it to the end, turn right up the hill and left past Wheal Jane. Bit different these days, but if you couldn't get a ton past the mine in a tweaked mk1 escort, you were considered a puff :) :) :)

I was also parked on that lane in my late teens, and the car wouldn't start after being parked in the rain for about 1/2 an hour...........in the dark.............

Happy days :)

I admit, I have needed my 205 fix a couple of times this week..... feels great after the "spanish slug" (copyright GLPoo)

I'll have to have a look at that lane :D

Well checked the oil again today and it's really low, nothing on the cardboard as yet but only put it down for a couple of hours ago. I ran the car as well for 5-10 minutes as well to see if that would make it leak.

I'm guessing it's lost around a litre in just over a week. There's got to be something serious for it to loose that much :(

Another update,

Put half a litre in tonight as my girlfriend has to use it for work and to pick up her nephew (always doing favours ;) ).

A good 20 drops, then seems to slow down. I've put a bucket as it's dripping off the sump at the moment.

It seems to be coming from above the sump roughly in the middle, I suspect a pipe but honestly have no idea. Think i'm going to have to take it apart and have a good look.

Any ideas where I could get replacement pipes if needed?

sounds like the oil cooler pipes and only leaks under pressure i.e. engine on or just switched off and continues to drip initially.
