Td Smoking And Missing When First Started?

My Turbo Diesel that i only picked up a few days ago has this annoying habit of smoking and missing on initial start-up, after only traveling for about 5mins the car is as sweet as a nut, no smoke and no missing.

does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and how i can sort it out?

my diesel 106 does this also,

 

i think its one of 2 things

either

1) the injectors are leaking overnight therefore having fuel in the chambers to start with which needs burning off

or

2) the valve clearances on the exhaust valves have closed up. I checked mine and they were outside of the tolerances stated in haynes but i havent got round to getting new shims yet as i need it everyday and taking the cam out and getting the shims machined to the right thickness will take a couple of days.

 

So in the first instance i'd say check your valve clearances when the engine is cold

I'd have though that you almost certainly have a glow plug or 2 shot. On the TDs they stay powered for a little after the engine starts to smooth things out. Normally you can tell with a volt meter. It's been a while but they should have a low resistance around 1-5ohms IIRC. If they are open or closed circuit they are shot.

 

Also check the glow plug control relay hasn't got corroded connectors. (Oh and get reasonable glow plugs, not cheap ones. The cheapo ones don't last)

ah i should have yes glow plugs are a possiblilty however i checked mine by putting 12v across them and they all glowed bright (and hot) instantly, however as i understand it they might not receive 12v infact but a lower voltage, can anyone confirm this?

all old peugeot diesels recieve 12 volts from the relay that should last around 10 to 15 seconds after intial start up to clean the burn in the cylinder. its only much newer diesels that run at lower voltages as the ecu turns them on or off depending on certain engine conditions.

Don't know what car tonycj is referring to but I know that the 306 & 405 Turbo Diesels have a post heating cycle.....this keeps the glow plugs on for approx 3 minutes after start up....if the engine temp is above 60 degrees the plugs will only stay on for about 15 seconds after start up.

 

Some models also had a micro switch on the diesel pump that switched the plugs off earlier if the throttle pedal was pressed & held open for a certain length of time.

 

As advised the first course of action would be to check the glow plugs & the operation of the relay that controls them.

Sorry about that the car in question is a 205 GRDT, its got 171k on the clock.

It used to belong to an electrician and i think its spent most of it on a building site judging by the ploughed field i got out of the arches, and the amount of dirt on the car itself!!!!!

i changed the air filter two days ago and there was leaves and dirt and the filter was the filthiest i have ever seen on any of the cars i have ever owned!!

so judging by this the car has'nt exactly been looked after! until now!

Long overdue oil change tonight (while at work naturaly) i am going to put in an engine flush before i drop the oil, any views on that or is it not worth it?

i have been told to use 10w-40 semi-synthetic oil too, by my local peugeot specialist.

I see the car in your sig now :P

 

I'm not sure if the 205 had a post heating feature or not so I can't advise on that maybe someone else with the same car will let you know.

 

I would still check the glow plugs as it sounds like you may have one off.

 

Have never used any of the engine flush stuff so cant help with that one either ;) .....10w-40 semi-synthetic oil will be fine.
