Swapping Torsion Bars And Shocks For Coilover Dampers

Recommended Posts

Is there any way of removing the rear torsion bars and shocks and fitting in place of the shocks a set of adjustable coilover dampers?

this would give adjustable ride height and damping depending on track or road use?

Just a thought...............

quite simply yes.

I have this done to my racecar and a few other forum members have had it done. My rear beam was modified by Mark Shillaber, but Colin Satchell is sorting the turrets on the new shell (Colin can do the lot though!).

Mine is done by disconnecting the torsionbars, longer stub axles and turrets welded into the wheelarches. Theres more to it no doubt but I only know the basics. This gives 1:1 movement of the dampers which improves the cars handling over bumps as the dampers work better.

If you wanted to keep the coilovers in the standard position I dont know if there is any benefit over the more conventional method (handling wise) and on a road car you really do not need the added quick adjustability. A good condition rear beam is very quick to adjust for ride height as the torsion bars can pop out by hand. I think i've altered a beams height in under an hour.

If you want to go for it then pm Colin as he's on this site under the username Eeyore

He's done a coilover conversion on a 306 with the dampers in standard position but that was another racecar.

cough - standard on the 205's ugly half sister - cough :D

What shocks do you use out of curiosity as I only have cheap nonsense in there at the moment, Sandy has suggested Avo's as they make a lot of universal ones and I can get a top mount made up at work

i've got Leda coilovers. They seem to do the job nicely when combined with Eibach race springs. They are back in business too so thats good news. They are a sort of halfway house between the cheaper stuff and the stupidly expensive race stuff like Ohlins.

For a car which sees a circuit only a few times a year I would fit decent Bilstein non adjustables and spend spare cash on a bolt in cage.

Yer it would cost a fair bit to do and probably not worth it unless a dedicated competition car

Funny you should say that I as I was nosing their site about 2 days ago and saw they were back in business and now based in the Midlands or something. I need to measure the spare shock thats been in my boot for about 3 weeks and send it off with photos heh.

Cheers guys,

I was just wondering if there was an aftermarket bolt on replacement that would allow easy adjustment.

for the costs involved its a race thing only then.

Thanks
