joey 0 Posted February 10, 2008 was wondering if these mounts can be replaced... my ones are both bent inwards as my gti recently got some front end damaged; god dammit . can they be unbolted or are they fixed to the chassis. cheers joe
Tom Fenton 1,542 Posted February 10, 2008 Yes you can unbolt them.
Mikey S 29 1 Cars Posted February 10, 2008 just bend them back.
CaptainP 2 Posted February 10, 2008 Yeah, just pop a pry bar through the hole and bend it back. When I replaced the front bumper on the CTI over Xmas I noticed the horrors behind - they had fibreglassed the bumper to the irons instead of bending them back. If they are REALLY badly bent remove them completely and stick them in a vice.
Rob Thomson 6 Posted February 10, 2008 The bumper irons are about £7 each from Peugeot.
GLPoomobile 958 Posted February 10, 2008 So out of interest, how do you remove them? I only ask as I had the bumpers off my very first GTI years ago and back then I was totally flumaxed as to how you get the brackets off! From what I can remember they are bolted inside the chassis legs, but I couldn't see any external nut/bolt to release them.
DaveW 6 Posted February 11, 2008 Yep thats how they come off, but normaly shear off due to age and being in the wheel arch exposed dont help!
Peetypug 5 Posted February 11, 2008 there's 2 nuts that hold them on 1 at the front and one in the inner arch iirc the nut also holds the wing strengthening bar in place as well
Rob Thomson 6 Posted February 11, 2008 there's 2 nuts that hold them on1 at the front and one in the inner arch iirc the nut also holds the wing strengthening bar in place as well Yes, that's correct. The irons have captive studs that stick out through the chassis rail that the bumper support bars bolt to. Both of mine sheared off when I tried to remove them. I was fretting about how to fix them until I realised how cheap they were from Pug...
Grim.Badger 15 Posted February 11, 2008 Don't just bend them back, once the metal has bent it will bend again much easier and give you less crash protection. For the price of new ones it just isn't worth it.
ifcho 0 Posted February 12, 2008 Well that new one crash protection in a
joey 0 Posted February 12, 2008 ah i see.. i wasnt sure where the second mounting nut was located,, as for bending it back i did this and wasnt happy wit the results so may as well replace. i can definatly see them shearing. i encountred ALOT of sheard bolts while in the process of unbolting the front bumper/ valance etc.. my side bumper mounts are also knackered(came off in my hand) ps anyone ever straightened the front of a 205, difficult no? there is no member that is naturally straight except for the bottom cross mem(under the rad) which is about 2mm thick my mate crashed his e30 lately and every member seems to be either horizontal or vertical,,damn German engineerin
Grim.Badger 15 Posted February 12, 2008 Well that new one crash protection in a 205 Believe it or not but the 205 actually has crash protection features; for example it was designed to carry the force of impact around and away from the driver and passenger
