Ive Got This 3" Rolled In Backbox (i Think It's A Janspeed),

Hi

Before i scrapped my XS i salvaged the backbox which i .think. is a Janspeed, it's the same diameter as the standard pug item and is defo straight-thru. It's a pretty old steel 'box and i've used a lot of hammerite rust remover in restoring it (by the way that stuff works well, the gel is good but the dip is better).

I'm thinking of getting my H-reg 1.6 up on the ramps and swapping the peugeot backbox for this one; i'm aware that the standard system is well tuned and should be retained for the best performance but i wanted to know if just changing the backbox would really have an effect on power/torque?

It sounded awesome on the XS, really popped and spluttered on the overrun and i'm not joking it sounded rally as.. Not obtrusive, uncontrolled chavvy noise but crackling, banshee ninja tone ;) Would be interested to hear what this 'box would sound like on my 1.6 just for giggles

So yeah just wanted to know if anyone else has tried swapping pug backbox for any other and what happened to performance. ;)

Thanks Rob

If you want to put a bigger backbox on the car then do it, I did it on one of my old peugeots and it made it feel a tiny bit more lively (probably in my head bacause of the noise that went with it) but the old exhaust could be that its clogged up or got a small hole or two in it that it is sapping minor performace, i mean we're talking about a couple of bhp here or there.

Just go for it, you wont notice power differences if you lose 3 bhp from fitting an aftermarket exhaust IMO. I would only say it matters if you are competing, rallying etc where every bit of bhp and torque count.
