Why's My Thermostat Housing Still Leaking

Recommended Posts

Dave_McC

Discovered my 1.6 Gti didn't have a thermostat fitted and the coolant hose elbow fitting was fitted with lots of silicone sealant. I cleaned all this off and fitted a thermostat last week with the 2 rubber O rings - one above and one below the thermostat itself. But I've been losing coolant all week and looking at it today coolant's being ejected out of the top of the join between the hose elbow and the housing on the end of the cylinder head. Is this a common problem and how do I fix it - I assume there isn't meant to be a gasket in this join? Do I need to put sealant on the joint faces?

Suggestions please....

Dave

Hello, is the hose elbow plastic?

I had a plastic one of my car and discovered it seemed to have warped and contiually leaked, just try another elbow if you have one.

hope this helps..

There should be a gasket between the thermostat housing and the head.

It's a metal elbow not plastic.

Gasket - aah - that might explain the leak then! I've got some spare gasket material so I'll make up a gasket and try it with that fitted. Just such a pain in the ar5e that you have to remove all the air filter trunking and AFM every time...

iirc, it's not actually a gasket.

when a new thermostat is fitted, it should have a rubber seal under and above the thermostat itself

it may sound obvious but clean up the gasket faces too, if there corroded it will weep,
