Oil Coming Out Of Bottom Of Dipstick

Recommended Posts

I took my car to the garage yesterday to check for oil leak and they said it was coming out of the dipstick where it goes into block, what causes this and is there anything i can do to stop it?

I'm guessing it's a breathing problem so i cleaned the two breather pipes that come from filler cap,is there any others i can check.

quite common, the dipstick is just an interference fit in the block, unbolt it+pull it up a little and pop some RTV around where it seats, should stop it leaking.

It should be, any decent instant automotive gasket ought to suffice.

They are actually quite loose into the block (or mine is). Not really an interference fit! Is any old silicone OK with engine oil or something special needed?

The problem with mine is i replaced the dipstick tube and when i took the old one out it was broken at the bottom,so i guess there must be some of the old dipstick stopping my new one going in properly. :D

So it's going to be sump off soon.

if it bolts to the head then it should be as far down as it needs to be, the sealant does need to be oil and heat resistant, something normal building/diy sealant isnt.

Got home from work today to find a big pool of oil under car so opened up bonnet to find dipstick was sticking out top of tube :)

I know it must a build up of pressure somewhere but what causes it and how can i fix it please?

just thought i've only been having oil problems since changing to shell helix oil.

edit: only bought a new dipstick 6 months ago.

Check all the breather hoses are clear, they are there to remove pressure in the crankcase (and oil fumes etc.).
