Also can anyone shed any light on where the engine number is! - assuming it aint been ground off!

Its a 1.9 btw. No idea on age as its been transplanted into a 1.6 shell.

Thanks in advance

should be 2 aluminium tags by the top r/h engine mounting, one black and silver with the engine code and the other with the number.

while stood at the front of your car with camcover on your left, if you look down on the left, under the lifting eye, you should see a metal plate.

if you post up the letters and numbers, one of us members will tell you what engine you have

Thanks for the advice,

Surely thats not a very good way of putting a number on an engine if they are removable by simply undoing the bolt that holds the lifting eye on?

And as it happens mine are missing!

would make it very easy to swap the engine and keep the same number.............

I trust i was lokoing at the right place.......... the lifting eye just above the alternator?

Im looking to ID the engine so i can find out what spark plug gap i need to set on a set of NGK BCP7ES

you don't need to alter the gap at all, they are pre set to 0.8mm if you get the correct ones for a 205 (IIRC nearly all GTi's run the same plug)

They also should not be adjusted as they aren't designed to be.

I never bother gapping the plugs. Just buy NGK BCP7ES and they'll be fine. Only a few quid each from any motor factors. Incidentally, I used NGK BCP7 (not ES) i think last time and there was no difference. Mine's a 1.6.

Thanks for the good concise advice guys.

Im off to have a look at another one this weekend, its a Graphite grey 1.9, insure of reg, i heard about it through a friend, its his brother in laws and its been in dry storage for the last 3 years with the engine out (not taken apart) because it was using a lot of oil and its apparently on 150K, the guy was due to rebuild it but ran out of steam after getting it out.

I may well be posting some photos and info over the weekend and asking for coments on valuations for it!

Thanks again
