Oh No Not Another Non Starter!

Hi Guys,

You know when you wish you'd never started something!!.

I've had my 3rd 205 gti 1.9 (1991 J-reg) since June and other than the usual has been really good until a few weeks ago. 1st off the starter motor packed in.

I've changed the starter motor, had to remove inlet manifold and fit a new gasket. this was all in the freezing cold weather. Put the car all back together and turned the key- guess what happens next. Yep you got it the engine turns over but nothing else happens. Took it all back to bits again and refitted everything and still no change. I've removed the fuel line from the injection rail and there's fuel coming out when i turn it over.

Removed the spark plugs and tried to see if sparking but there appears to be no spark. The coil on the injection rail is getting really hot after about 5mins so it seems we have power there. The other strange thing is that when i took out the spark plugs i expected them to be damp and get a real strong smell of petrol but that wasn't the case!!

Any clues?

This might be a dumb suggestion, but if there's fuel at the rail, but the plugs don't smell of petrol, then logic says no fuel in combustion chamber which could mean valves no openey. Have you checked the cam belt? And was the car running recently and has now just stopped?

Also and firstly, pull the fuel rail complete with injectors off the head and turn it over and see if the injectors are firing. Then look at above, rather worrying option.

Thanks for your reply,

The car was running two days before the starter motor was changed. Cambelt is definatley ok. I'll try removing the fuel rail 2moro night as it's a tad dark now

There are all sorts of things that can be knocked off during the work that will stop it starting so I'd just go round everything and check nothing silly is disconnected. We have all done this! E.g. AFM connector, coil connections, wire from dizzy to ignition amp can get disturbed, leaving the bolt out the holds the oil filler on (this leaves a hole open into the inlet), etc

Just go round and check everything, don't assume things are OK just cause you shouldn't have disturbed them, before worrying about more major stuff.

Did anyone mention the "brown multiplug"? I would have thought that it was possible to disturb this if changing the starter. Failing that - are all connections to the new starter tight and OK?

Just got back in,

Removed the injectors and rail and cranked the engine. Definatley no fuel coming out of the injectors. Checked all connections again and still nothing obvious found.

Again checked the spark plugs and doesn't look like it's sparking. I think i'm gonna remove everything again and check the brown plug and connections. Starting to get a bit worried now!

Does any one know which injector plkug goes on which cylinder. I'm 99% certain i've got them back right as they were marked up. Just want to double check.

Stop being worried...

If you loose the signal from the dizzy to ignition amp then you loose spark and injectors. Most likely a broken wire in the cable from the dizzy but could also be ignition amp or connector problem.

Doesn't mater, they all fire at the same time.

I'd check for a broken wire first.

Hi Guys,

My pug is finally back on the road. I managed to get a brand new ignition amp from www.ignitioncarparts.co.uk/ for 12 quid. Fitted the amp and she fired up first time.

Thanks to all those who helped, now it's time to go and take her for a thrash

See you soon

Steve
