Is There A Difference Between The 1.6 And 1.9 Exhaust?

Recommended Posts

Hiya Guys

I was just wondering if there was a difference between the 1.6 and 1.9 gti exhausts?

I'm wondering if my 1.6 exhaust would restrict a 1.9 Mi16?

I've been told i should be ok. My house mate seems to think otherwise.

Thanks

They're the same.

It's probably less restrictive than the 405 exhaust.

not really, the 405 has a larger diameter exhaust than the 205.

It is longer though and has more bends in it.

Depends on the year, Phase 1 systems are smaller than phase 2 which are OK to use, The phase 1 (3 piece) is only 1 1/2" bore so not very good at all.

Thanks for the replys guys

My car is a phase 1 so it sounds like i might have to get a new exhaust too.

Which diameter pipe do i need?

Any suggestions on what to get.

Either an old one of a 1.9 GTI or a brand new one?

I did read that the original exhausts were very good and not to get something too big otherwise that would reduce the power?!

As stated, 1.6 & 1.9 systems the same. I originally ran my Mi engine on the original 1.6 system with no problems whatsoever, less the Mi exhaust manifold to downpipe issue, which I guess you know about.

There should be plenty of half decent, good value 1.6/1.9 second hand systems in the 'for sale' section on this forum.

Just take a look at the exhaust behind the rear silancer to identify an early (3 piece) from a later (2 piece). The 3 piece uses a sleeve fit (one pipe over the other) and the later ones use an olive.

I have a complete 1.9 exhaust for sale, downpipe with spliter in very good condition, welded to centre section with silencer, then a back box( back box has only done ~7000 miles) which is seperate and clamps on £35 for the lot if your interested. Im in reading as well so not too far to collect. Send me a pm if you would like it

Cheers.

Henry.

Hi smokey, I accidentally clicked delete on your pm instead of reply, clicked back on the browser and sent a msg, but not sure if it went through.
