Rebuild On Head - Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Kitch

Right, basically I managed to wreck the bottom end on my Mi lump several years ago with oil surge. I rebuilt it as best I could (1st time and all that) and luckily so far it's been good. I also changed the valve seals in the head as they'd gone a bit hard and it was puffing a bit of blue. Now I thought I'd labelled all the valves up properly to refit them as they came out, but something somewhere must have gone tits up as once I'd put the engine back together, the tappets were making an awful noise. Sounded like a Kent engine in a 20yr old Fiesta! Engine ran fine, oil pressure fine. I've tried all number of different flushes, different oils and techniques and I still don't know to this day why they're so noisy! So with the engine coming out soon, I'm planning to overhaul the tappets using some advice gratefully recieved from Dr Sarty (thanks again mate).

Question is, do I remove the head and replace that little oilway gauze type filter too? Could that have an affect on oil flow to the lifters? Could it have blocked somehow during the oil surge/starvation brief period? Because if I don't need to touch it, I don't need to remove the head and that's happy days as far as I'm concerned. I didn't even know it exsisted last time I removed the head, so I don't know what it looked like back then.

Any ideas? Or is there anything else I'm missing?

Cheers

refresh the tappets as follows:

- Remove piston assembly by tapping on a peice of wood.

- Depress the ball to empty the old oil.

- Put new engine oil in the tappet bore.

There is are also 2 valves at the end of the oilways on the head which maintain oil pressure to the tappets, ensure these are fully operational.

Ok thanks for suggestions so far. So whats the general opinion on this filter in the head then? Because if I can avoid removing the head and changing the belt and gasket it'll save me both money and time.

And where can I find these valves? Are they under the head or on top with the cams?

Thanks

these engines have oil spraybars don't they? check that this isn't blocked, apparently a very common fault on BMW's that causes a lot of valve train noise.

Just as additional thought. When you change the oil on these engines they do appear to be very tappety until the oil gets around. This can be for 5 seconds or 20 minutes.

From memory the valve plugs are located on the timing end of the head next to the camshaft oil seals, so you would have to removed the timing belt to get to them anyway.
