Toddy 7 Posted February 2, 2008 What is the best way to find the mid point of TDC on a GTI6 engine when it is installed in the car using dial gauges? Cheers in advance
Stu 18 Posted February 2, 2008 You really need a timing disk to bolt to the crank mate to get it bang on, its guess work otherwise.
petert 601 Posted February 3, 2008 Point a pointer on the Motronic teeth, via hole in gearbox, and count how many teeth each side of TDC. For example, estimate TDC down the plug hole with your dial gauge. I'm assuming you have a long pointer and can reach the top of the piston. Mark off your pointer onto the Motronic teeth. If you go say 4 teeth each way, you should get the same reading on your dial gauge. If the readings differ, keep adjusting your mark until they're the same. Each tooth on the flywheel is 6 degrees. It's the best timing disk you'll get.
